4. Was justice served? Provide arguments in support of your answer.

Through the course of the movie, a number of times we anticipated a climax followed by the
declaration of a judgement, as that would have played a key role in giving a verdict whether
justice was served or not. However, to the viewers’ dismay, at no point did they come across the
court giving a final judgement. This in principle, obliterates the possibility of justice being
served. Hence, it is certainly established how justice was not served.

Throughout the movie we see the protagonist (plaintiff), encircling the portals of the court,
attending each session, merely in the hope to receive justice. We see the retired Mr. Joshi along
with his doting wife, beating age and worsening financial circumstances, fighting tirelessly
against the landlord, in order to restore an entire building just to provide a respectable lifestyle to
their family. With solely the intention of filing one suit to attain justice, Joshi is seen drawn into
a whirlpool of futile countersuits by the landlord due to lack of credible confutation, on the
latter’s part. This includes suits for Eviction and Assault (Battery in this case, as the event was of
physical assault) This goes on until six long years, worsening the building as well as the couple’s
condition. Adding to this was the insensitivity of the two councilmen, who were succeeding in
their field at the expense of the protagonist’s plight. The family had to go through humiliation
and ridicule, as the suit also caused them their safety for the landlord sent gangsters to terrorize
them. At the end of six years, we finally see an advancement, when the judge decided to inspect
the building personally, in order to give a fair judgement. However, to the plaintiff’s despair the
two parties indulged in a baseless argument, which shook Mr. Joshi’s morale leading him to
vigorously shake one of the support bamboos hard enough for half of the building to collapse.
This accurately symbolized the vulnerability of both the building and its resident, Joshi. The
following was not unexpected, as the corpse of old Joshi, lay amidst the shackles and rumbles,
distinctly lamenting at the fact, that justice was not served.
