Y74 Pressure Control Valve?

As part of my on going quest to sort the rough running of my engine I have been testing the fuel injection
system with Star.

The live data has shown ever since I have owned the car (about 4 years) that the pressure and quantity
regulators are just out of tolerance.

Today I tried the test for leaks at the Y74 pressure control valve on the end of the fuel rail.

The test calls for connecting a fuel line where the leak off line normally connects to (fuel rail return
connection). Then to check if fuel is emitted form this new temporary hose. Also the larger fuel tank
return line is clamped. If any fuel is emitted this means the valve is faulty.

My question is if the valve should remain plugged in (electrically)?

I ask as when I tested it the fuel did not just drip out as suggested is normal in Star but gushed out!
(actually Star says no fuel should come out)

The resultant graph showed that rail pressure did achieve 1400 bar which was quite surprising
considering the leak rate

Any help greatly appreciated.

Fuel is emitted during the first 30 seconds of engine running and when fuel temp is below 20 Celsius.

The fuel system on the CDI engines is very sophisticated.

I'm still at a lose why the actual values for quantity and pressure control valves are out of spec at idle. I
have just done another leak off test this time using star. This test raises the rail pressure to 1400 bar.
The resultant leak off quantities were all 30 to 40ml.

When performing the smooth running test, injector 5 is at 2.75mm3/hub max value. Would this cause a
problem? Star says max permitted value of 5mm3/hub

Thanks

How so? Duty cycle too high or too low?

Rail pressure is supposedly controlled by quantity control valve when warmed - saves power because
the HP pump only pumps as much as needed - but I imagine it will have to tweak the pressure valve a bit
to get best results.

If the 'problem' is rough running, and you are not logging rail pressure deviation fault codes I would look
elsewhere.

2.75mm3/hub is absolutely fine BTW

hmm.. If I recall right, leak flow limit was 20ml/min (at idle?) and max difference 20% between injectors,

about the correction value; >3 values can already cause some symptoms, did you test values at different
revs?

Thanks Alex for the explanation. I believe earlier cdis did not use a quantity control valve.

The duty cycle for both valves are just a few percentage points higher than they should be at idle and are
marked in bold. Do they normally run half way in the specified duty cycle range?

I am not getting any rail pressure deviation codes and there is plenty of power.

I have had this on going vibration at light load and gear change and before I look at the TC again I
wanted to get the engine fully in spec.

The idle vibration is certainly evident in the cabin but not too bad for a diesel.

Cheers

the idle leak in your case?

I did an idle test a while ago resulting in about 7ml/min leak off. All fairly equal

This recent leak test was done using star where it raised the rail pressure to 1400 bar. RPM was about
1500 I think. I assume this situation is the most demanding on the injectors in terms of leak off.

I did try going for a drive while running the smooth running test and two other injectors went to about
2.5.

Thanks
