Hence it is of prime importance to not only focus on process variables but also the factors that a component might
encounter during the phase of storage, transportation, on­field installation and service life. A so­called perfect
component without any flaws, which is just produced, may not remain the same by the time it reaches the consumer. A
lot of studies is available in literature that evaluates the performance of composites under lateral loading having simple
geometries like plates and beams. The behavior of cylindrical components made of composite materials under lateral
loads has received less focus. The lateral load can be in the form of impact or quasi­static loading. Composite
components may also be subjected to impact while handling, maintenance etc. say by free fall or a heavy object like a
spanner falling onto it. Such an incident of low­velocity impact can cause a reduction of up to 50% of tensile or
compressive strength
