INTRODUCTION

A. Attention material/Credibility Material: We all perceive others through the lens of our own biology
and its associated sociological position relative to the other observed. Even the most “woke” person
enter relationships with others with a bias derived from both modern culture and generations of genetic
memory which predispose the individual entering the relationship to perceive bonds of kinship or
attraction based on complex interactions of biochemical instinctual and learned cultural behaviors.

B. Tie to the audience: Greeting’s toastmasters, and honored guests, today I celebrate the diversity of
genetic expression in our participants. Genetic expression is not simply race, or gender but is also age
and height, intellect and unfortunately in my case a predisposition to a form of cancer known as
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. So disposed to this cancer was my genome that it required a clinical trial of a
novel form of stem cell therapy, a form of experimental gene therapy, to treat. As a result, I can say that
who I am now is a result of elective genetic modification.

C. Thesis and Preview: Today I am sharing the first of a series of mini speeches derived from an
interview I gave for David Wolf of the University of Colorado, a columnist for Wired magazine on the
social implications of the availability of elective genomic modification technologies for mature human
population.

II. BODY

Preface

A. Prior to my interview with Dr Wolf I was given a topic list I was to cover this provided the
foundation and subject matter for the interview. I am sharing the slide.
B. In my interview with Dr Wolf I made a number of initial preface disclaimers defining what I was
not discussing, as sometimes the best way to define a topic is to explicitly define what you
intend to exclude.
a. First, I chose to exclude any irreversible modification done without the consent of the
mature sentient individual as ethically this constitutes a form of assault even if done
with the best of intent.
b. Second, The religious ramifications of “playing God” are beyond my ability to resolve
and if I were to have issue personally my own recovery through enhanced stem cell
therapy and gene modification would not be possible.
c. Third, I accept that Bad Actors can and will misuse this and any new technology that is
developed, that is an unavoidable element of the human condition.

1. Personal Gene Editing Technologies will follow a maturity trajectory much like other
medical technologies

Indicators that this postulate is correct.

(1) Creation and adoption of a Genomics Data Commons (GDC) that is structured to encourage
benevolent use and makes the ethical acquisition and use of genomic data the path of least
resistance.

(2) Medical adoption and licensed use of approved, vetted hematopoietic stem cells therapies
will make chronic conditions such as diabetes1, sickle cell2 (HBB BCL11A), obesity3 and even
age related degeneration4 at relatively low cost.

20yrs Renormalization of social thought regarding phenotypic human variation (a.k.a the-isms)
as the ability to change apparent age, physique, skin, hair, gender and facial traits becomes
more malleable and a matter of individual preference/expression much as hair dyes
renormalized the social perception of straight or curled, blond, red, brown and black hair into
issues of malleable self-expression

2. Many of our current social struggles are based on perceived aspects of individual
identity that have at their foundation a genomic component which would be made potentially
obsolete if individuals were permitted the option to selectively modify their own genetic identity
and expression throughout their lifetimes.

Current News.

“Social Justice” Remediation of cultural bias as a result of successive tiers of colonization with
each group maintaining its own identity based on aspects of heredity and genetic affinity.

“Gender inequality” is based on perceptions of capability based on the function and presence
of SRY SOX9, FOXL2  and the cultural structures that have evolved to either compensate or
exacerbate the expression of those genes.

“Sexual orientation” which is derived from a complex interaction of genetic interactions and
social structures all revolving around the presence or absence of SRY SOX9, FOXL2 function
between two or more individuals.

“Ageism” a complex expression of genetic expression derived from telomere length interacting
with Aging-associated polymorphisms in the IGF1R, PON1, APOC3 and PI3K genes among
other in the process of being discovered.
“Obesity” a result of one of several metabolic maladaptation’s each with a differing genetic
component.
3. Thus my projected social impact of elective gene manipulation is that he current
individual bias and misperceptions of race, gender, sexual orientation, intellectual aptitude,
physique, relative health, age and even feelings of kinship will become refactored when
individuals are able to selectively modify their own genetic identity and expression throughout
their lifetimes.

I base this projection on historical misperception of Red Hair in the middle ages.

19th century scholar Montague Summers explains how it was a common belief in Ancient
Egypt.

In ancient Egypt,, human sacrifices were offered at the grave of Osiris, and the victims were red-
haired men who were burned, their ashes being scattered far and wide by winnowing-fans

In mideval Europe Red hair was considered as a sign of witchcraft. During the witch trials,
45,000 red-haired women are estimated to have been burned for witchcraft in 15th century
Germany medieval author Theophilus Presbyter published a scholarly article asserting the blood
of a red headed man was an essential ingredient to help create a particular color of paint:
Spanish gold. Other essential ingredients included basilisk powder, copper and vinegar.
Today after a trip to Walmart anyone with $2.68 can have red hair
