The theme of P.L. is the widest that has ever been attempted by main in prose or rhyme.

The
theme of his immortal epic is the fall of man from paradise on account of his sin. Adam and Eve,
our first progenitors, lived a blessed life in the Garden of Eden in heaven. They were given full
freedom to enjoy everything that was there in Eden, except that of tasting “the Emit of the Tree
of Knowledge.” But led partly by a serpent Eve plucked a fruit from the tree of knowledge and
ate it. She also prevailed upon Adam to do the same. This was the first act of sin, a transgression
of God’s command. As a punishment for this sin Adam and Eve were expelled from paradise and
their progeny-mankind-was subjected to death. This is the basic theme of P.L.
