IMPORTANT NOTES ON ANA CHEM LECTURE 3 (PART 1)

Selecting and Handling Reagents and other chemicals Heating Equipment: Burners
Classifying chemicals: 1. Meker Burner – provides highest temperatures. It
usually yields blow flame.
1. ACS (Reagent) Grade – used when dealing with
2. Tirril Burner – second among the 3 burners.
experimentations such as drug creation, some
3. Bunsen Burner – gives the lowest temperature
reagent will require you to use the ACS grade or the
flame.
reagent grade.
2. Primary Standard Grade – also a good reagent
for chemical grade which is also used for many
experimenters as a standard material in comparing
the concentration and the purity of a chemical with
another.
3. Laboratory Grade – used for educational
purposes. It is what we usually find in classrooms
and even in laboratories.
4. Technical Grade – used for commercial and
industrial purposes.
5. Special Purpose Reagent Chemicals – it is
prepared for a specific application and a specific
kind of use.
Measuring Mass
Types of Analytical Balances:
1. Macrobalances – maximum capacity ranging
between 160 and 200 g. Measurements can also
be made with a standard deviation of ±0.1 mg.
2. Semimicroanalytical Balances – have a
maximum loading of 10 to 30 g with a precision
of ±0.01 mg.
3. Microanalytical Balances – has a capacity of 1
to 3 g and a precision of ±0.001 mg.
*The most precise among the three would be the
Microanalytical balances as it can give you the
highest possible number of uncertainties. However,
its limitation is that it can only load up 1 to 3 grams,
anything that exceeds you will have to consider using
the other two types of analytical balances.
