CHAPTER 1

1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Study

Kids are small, they are cute and adorable and they are curious and are always up for something.
Their innocence and their ability to see and perceive this world of ours as something new is
something that makes us all feel overwhelmed with joy (1).
Children's clothing or kids' clothing is clothing for children who have not yet grown to full
height. Children's clothing is often more casual than adult clothing, fit for play and rest. More
recently, however, a lot of children‟s wear is heavily influenced by trends in adult fashion. Due
to the rise of social media platforms such as Instagram celebrities and fashion bloggers have
been using their accounts to post pictures of their children wearing luxury "street style" clothing,
thus inspiring parents to dress their children as they would dress themselves (2). Function and
design must meet at the right proportions in children's clothes for it to be popular and accepted.
Fabric choices, openings and fastenings, fit and ease, trimmings used are all major considerations
when designing children's wear. kids wear is a little different from adult wear because kids skin
happens to be very soft and fragile and any material that is harsh might be uncomfortable for the
kid and they will be unhappy and cry if they are made to wear that which is why kids wear is
generally made from very select blends and soft cotton to make sure that they are soft and loose-
fitting that the children do not feel trapped in their clothing.

Ancient astronomy had contributed away for the modern development of astronomy. The history
of astronomy development in Ethiopian was liked with different beliefs and culture of the society.
The Ethiopians were the first who invented the science of stars, and gave names to the planets,
not at random and without meaning, but descriptive of the qualities which they conceived them
to possess; and it was from them that this art passed, still in an imperfect state, to the Egyptians.
Even though, Ethiopian‟s contributions for astronomy in the world were immense but the
journey of modern astronomy is still in the infant stage.

Representing a product with a cultural style and a context can also enhance existing product lines
and lead to the development of new market opportunities. Designing with cultural concepts,

1
embodied with symbolic cultural meanings can aid revitalization. On the other hand culture plays
a vital role in value- adding and creates the core of product value and the integrating culture
features into products' design will become a design trend in global market.

Figure 1 Ethiopian civilization on astronomy book

Since the beginning of humanity, Ethiopia was the origin of some of the most remarkable and
important people in history.

With this respect, this study, which is aimed to create a collection development process model
for designers as well as promoting and carrying the past civilization on Ethiopia, where many
civilizations were hosted for thousands of years which has a rich in a technology that written on
Enoch . Astrology belong to Ethiopian civilizations were to use embroidery patterns.

2
1.2 problem statement
Ethiopia is the first who invented the science of stars, while other countries are using it as their
own creation and there are some international and well known movies are made based on the
past civilization of Ethiopia however; there have been no astronomical costumes before in
Ethiopia.

1.3 General objective and Specific objective

1.3.1 General Objectives
To design and develop a new kids wear inspired by our ancestor astronomical study

1.3.2 Specific Objectives

 In order to increase kids awareness about Ethiopian astronomical civilization

 For development of motif from the consternation.
 In order to promote the contribution of Ethiopia on astronomy civilization.

 To design and construct a garment which is suitable and comfortable to kids.

 To create new decorative designs clothes for children's.

 To apply optical materials to suit the attention of children

1.4 Justifications
Now day there are several books and movies that are made by looking some history on astrology
of Ethiopia even though they do not give the acknowledgement.

While in Ethiopia there are history and past civilization that are written down in Enoch. But there
are not much works that are made by using this civilization and history while other countries are
using it as they own creation. „‟why are the world afraid to tell about the past history and
civilization of Ethiopia.‟‟ Doctor Rodhas said on his book Andromeda. This question has to be
answered for the new generation kids.

3
1.5 Benefit and beneficiaries
1.5.1 Benefits

CHAPTER 2

2 LITREATURE REVIEW
2.1 Ethiopian civilization on astronomy
• Lucian‟s book on astrology: ―The Ethiopians were the first who invented the science of stars,
and gave names to the planets, not at random and without meaning, but descriptive of the
qualities which they conceived them to possess; and it was from them that this art passed, still in
an imperfect state, to the Egyptians. Thus the Ethiopian of Thebes named stars of inundation, or
Aquarius, those stars under which the Nile began to overflow; stars of the ox or bull, those under
which they began to plow, stars of the lion, those under which that animal, driven from the desert
by thirst, appeared on the banks of the Nile; stars of the sheaf, or of the harvest virgin, those of
the reaping season; stars of the lamb, stars of the two kids, those under which these precious
animals were brought forth (3).

 stars of the sheaf, or of the harvest virgin, those of the reaping season;
 stars of the lamb, stars of the two kids, those under which these precious animals were
brought forth. – Thus the same Ethiopian having observed that the return of the
inundation always corresponded with the rising of a beautiful star which appeared
towards the source of the Nile, and seemed to warn the husbandman against the coming
waters, he compared this action to that of the animal who, by his barking, gives notice of
danger, and he called this star the dog, the barker (Sirius).
 Ethiopian king, Cepheus, whose fame was so great that he and his family were
immortalized in the stars.
 The wife of King Cepheus was Queen Cassiopeia, and his daughter, Princess
Andromeda.
 The star groups of the celestial sphere, which are named after them are called the
ROYAL FAMILY (the constellations: CEPHEUS, CASSIOPEIA and ANDROMEDA.)
 It may seem strange that legendary rulers of ancient Ethiopia should still have their
names graven on our star maps, but the voice of history gives us a clue (4).

5
2.1.1 Interview

Figure 2 seifu on ebs tv show on Andromeda interview

 He said: “at 32:15-32:32 time It was a minute when the kid thanked to the author of
Andromeda book for explaining this wonderful book and in order how to explore and to
know about Ethiopian past history and civilization on a space science”.
 At 29:03-30.00 time dr.rodhas said ”as kid kidustry‟s on Andromeda that in his quest to
find out about Ethiopia history past civilization, it is not difficult to imagine that Ethiopia
has a bright future” (5).

2.1.2 Summary
As we understand from the interview kids are interested to know about the astronomy, we
conclude that as a designer designing and constructing based on the astronomy will step up the
acceptance of what we done on the study.

2.3 Time astrology aligned with the fashion run way
Astrology has always been a pivotal aspect of pop culture, allowing avid followers to be guided
down a rabbit-hole of star signs, moon signs, and foreboding predictions. Fashion has been no
stranger to the world of astrology, either. From Mugler masterpieces to whimsical Dior
silhouettes, the runway has served as an avid platform for designers to offer their unique take on
astrology. Offering insight into predictions and taking on fashionable archetypes, designers have
never shied away from playing with the beloved practice. Scroll through to relive the best
astrological moments that graced the runways (6).

Figure 9 Emilio pucci fall/winter 2015

10
the designer referenced astrology through emotive hand drawn designs printed on columnar
silhouettes.

Figure 10 john Galliano spring/summer

Referenced elements of zodiac signs through the lens his signature story telling. As models
adorned facts of different star signs, a parallel universe was created- a chic one at that

11
Figure 11 Versace spring/summer 2016

With the theme of "Space Camp" dominating Versace's Spring/Summer 2016, Donatella Versace
certainly referenced the world of astrology through bold and emphasized graphics.

2.4 design children‟s wear

Designs are developed around some fundamental concepts. The comfort, safety, and appearance
of the child comprise the primary focus; but design approaches to these may vary with the age of
the child. Ease of care is also an important consideration. Because the most inexpensive and eye-
catching outfit won't sell. Durability is important for play clothes and outerwear, whereas
uniqueness and decoration help sell party dresses. Seasonal factors influence design, not only in
terms of winter versus summer but trends throughout the fashion year. Because many clothes
enjoy a second life as hand-me-downs, features like extra-long hems and cuffs are considered in
design (7).

3.1.1 Research design

The methods which will used in this research are the Explorative ,Descriptive and
narrative research methods. Explorative used to investigate the problems and other factors
related to research problem statement.

Descriptive research is used to justify current status and make judgment which help to improving
the usage of our own history and civilization in terms of design, availability and comfort of the
target group.

Narrative research is used to tell some astronomy history of Ethiopian civilization on the
literature that used to find out what research has already be done and identify what is unknown
with in our topic.

3.1.2 Source of data

The study uses primary and secondary source of data. primary data‟s obtained by communication
and observation about what is happing in Ethiopian kids wear what other function give other
than covering the body. Secondary data‟s obtained from books, related studies and websites.

3.2 Materials
Materials required improving the exiting cultural design and making it to relate with the past
history and civilization in astronomy by using textile products and different glowing accessories
and by making embroideries.

3.2.1 Textile products and accessories

The material used for developing this product has to be source from different local
distributer shops. The materials like, shema fabric, zipper, snap button, fussing thread.

3.2.2 Ethiopian hand woven fabric shema

 Is an Ethiopian traditional fabric
 Made from handpicked cotton woven on hand loom in long strips which are then sewn
together
 Is very breathable
 100% cotton fabric exporters believe cotton draws heat away from the skin and keep the
body cool and dry in humid weather, but in cold temperatures it can provide insulation,

14
keeping the cold and wet out. These attributes make cotton clothing appropriate for all
season.
 Preferable fabric for kid in order to protect their body from irritation
