Subject: - Construction of CARO Building, Begumpet, Hyderabad

The promoters plan to construct multi-storeyed structure.

The probable foundation depth is RL 515.50 m where silt sand layer has met. The refusal
SPT potential is noted at founding level.
a. Safe Bearing Capacity calculations:-
1. IS code method(IS: 6403-1981):
The safe bearing capacity can be calculated by following formulae as per IS 6403: 1981, for SPT
of 50 - Φ value is around 400
Determination of bearing capacity of shallow foundations as per IS 6403: 1981

Type of analysis :- Based on shear strength parameters

2. Meyerhof’s approach (ASCE1978 )

The Meyerhof’s proposes a simple relation to evaluate the Safe bearing capacity based on
standard penetration tests. N= 50 at RL 515.50 m on the silt sand layer.
q safe = N = 50 ...( Mayerhoff ASCE1978 )
q safe =50 T/m2
Hence safe bearing Capacity by Meyerhof’s approachis 50 t/m2.
3. Cole and Stroud’s approach (1976)

The Cole and Stroud’s (1976) approach proposed to evaluate the safe bearing capacity from
projected SPT value. The approximate SPT value at RL 515.50 m is N= 50. The shear strength
for N=50 is 30 t/m2.

Fig. 2 - Scale of strength and N values for weak rock and soils (Cole & Stroud)
C u = 30 t/m2 (at RL 515.50 m) – From the chart proposed by Cole and Stroud.

N c = 5.14. (For Open Foundation)

The S.B.C. is works out as

q u = 30x 5.14 = 154.2T/m2

q safe = 154.2/2.50 = 61 T/m2 (Factor of safety = 2.50 as proposed by Cole

and Stroud.)
Hence safe bearing Capacity by Cole and Stroud’s (1976) approach is 61t/m2.

Table 1. Safe bearing capacity by different methods

No. Method Safe Bearing Capacity (T/m2)
1 IS: 6403-1981 97
2 Meyerhof’s approach (ASCE1978) 50
3 Cole and Stroud’s (1976) 61

On taking a conservative view lowest value of Safe Bearing Capacity of 50 t/m2 for footing
design is proposed.

b. Settlement calculations:-
The settlement under loading intensity correspond to S.B.C. of 50 t/m2 can be assumed by
resorting to following equation.
P×L
S = ----------
A× E
P
Where ---- = 50 t/m2 = 5 kg/cm2
A
L = the significant depth say 6m = 600 cm
E = Modulus of elasticity

Out of above parameters, only ‘E’ value is unknown which can be evaluated by the following
method:
E=500 c (E value can be worked out as following relation given in National Research Council of
Canada(1975).)
For cohesion ‘C’ value using the Cole and Stroud’s (1976) approach to evaluate the safe bearing
capacity from projected SPT value. The approximate SPT value at is N= 50
C u = 30 t/m2 …from the chart proposed by Cole and Stroud.
= 500 x 30 = 15000 t/m2.

E= 1500 Kg/cm2
P×L
∂ = ----------
A× E
5 x 600
∴ Settlement= ∂ = ----------------- = 2cm = 20 mm ≅20 mm
1500

Estimated settlement of the footing will be around 20 mm. The settlement of 25 mm can be
considered for design considering conservative way in view of variation in soil layer.
