Problem 1
Let p be a prime and let A =< a1 > × < a2 > × · · · × < an > be an abelian p-group
(written multiplicatively), where |ai | = pni > 1 for all i. Define the pth power map
φ : A → A by x 7→ xp .
1. Prove that φ is a homomomorphism.
2. Describe the image and the kernel of φ in terms of the given generators.
3. Show that both ker(φ) and A/im(φ) are isomorphic to to a direct product of
cyclic groups of order p.

Problem 2
Let A be a finite abelian group (written mutlitplicatively) and let p be a prime dividing
|A|. Let Ap := {ap | a ∈ A} and Ap := {x | xp = 1}.
1. Prove that A/Ap ∼
= Ap .
2. Prove that the number of subgroups of A of order p equals the number of
subgroups of A of index p.

Problem 3
Let A = Z60 × Z45 × Z12 × Z36 . Find the number of elements of order 2 and the
number of subgroups of index 2 in A.

Problem 4
Let G be a finite abelian group of type (n1 , n2 , . . . , nt ). Prove that G contains an
element of order m if and only if m | n1 .
