CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE
TEACHER IN 21ST CENTURY
1. PLANNING AND ORGANIZATION
Teachers need to look to the future and be able to organize and plan ahead for their classes.
Prepared teachers give way to prepared students.

2. ASSESSMENT
Teachers must be able to create effective assessments that will determine what the students have
learned in class. These assessments can then be used to adapt lesson plans and mold the learning
experience to each child’s need.
3. COLLABORATE
Technology allows collaboration between teachers & students. Creating digital resources, presentations,
and projects together with other educators and students will make classroom activities resemble the real
world. Collaboration should go beyond sharing documents via e-mail or creating PowerPoint presentations.
Many great ideas never go beyond a conversation or paper copy, which is a great loss! Collaboration
globally can change our entire experience!

4. ADAPTIVE
A 21st century teacher is able to adapt to whatever comes their way. Teaching is a career that has
pretty much stayed the same over the past few decades. The tools have changed over the years
(Smart boards have replaced chalkboards, tablets have replaced textbooks) but the practice has not.
The 21st century teacher is able to look at their practice and adapt based on the needs of their
students. They must be able to adapt their teaching style to include different modes of learning,
adapt when a lesson fails, and adapt to new technology. They must be able to adapt to the curriculum
and the requirements and be able to use their imagination to teach in creative ways
