1. uncovered, (b) covered with a light lid , and (c) covered with a heavy lid. For which
case will the cooking time be the shortest? Why?

2. Draw an isobaric process on Pv and Tv diagram for a) Argon b) Helium

Closed and Open System

1. A well-insulated rigid tank contains 5 kg of a saturated liquid–vapor mixture of water
at l00 kPa. Initially, three-quarters of the mass is in the liquid phase. An electric
resistor placed in the tank is connected to a 110-V source, and a current of 8 A flows
through the resistor when the switch is turned on. Determine how long it will take to
vaporize all the liquid in the tank. Also, show the process on a T-v diagram with
respect to saturation lines.
2. Consider a piston–cylinder device that contains 0.5kg air. Now, heat is transferred to
the air at constant pressure and the air temperature increases by 5°C. Determine the
expansion work done during this process.

3. Carbon dioxide enters an adiabatic compressor at 100 kPa and 300 K at a rate of 0.5
kg/s and leaves at 600 kPa and 450 K. Neglecting kinetic energy changes, determine
(a) the volume flow rate of the carbon dioxide at the compressor inlet and (b) the
power input to the compressor.
4. A house has an electric heating system that consists of a 300-W fan and an electric
resistance heating element placed in a duct. Air flows steadily through the duct at a
rate of 0.6 kbbg/s and experiences a temperature rise of 7°C. The rate of heat loss
from the air in the duct is estimated to be 300 W. Determine the power rating of the
electric resistance heating element.
Equation of State
5. Determine the specific volume of superheated water vapor at 10 MPa and 400°C,
using (a) the ideal-gas equation, (b) the generalized compressibility chart. Also
determine the percent error compared to steam table value.
Answer: (a) 0.0316 m3/kg ; 17.6% (b) 0.02609 m3/kg; 1.2%

6. Refrigerant-134a at 700 kPa has a specific volume of 0.046042 m3/kg. Determine

the temperature of the refrigerant based on (a) the generalized compressibility
chart, (b) the van der Waals equation, and (c) Determine % error based on the
refrigerant tables.
