ELECTRONICS ON SHAKER TABLE

Overview
Electronic devices/ components installed also see the vibration loads when applied
to the system. It may happen that due to this vibration the components or the
connections (solder) between them may be damaged. An analysis of the assembly
subjected to shaker vibration will provide better detail into the deformation pattern
and frequency response of the system.

Goals
To see the deformation and frequency response of an electronics assembly in an
enclosure subjected to horizontal sinusoidal excitation.

Steps
1. Open Ansys workbench, create a "Modal Analysis" system
2. Define material property for the board, components and enclosure. Structural
steel is used material for demonstration purpose only. Proper materials should
be chosen for the analysis.
3. Import model, it will look like Figure 1.

4. Assign material to geometry.

5. Fix the enclosure at the bottom, as indicated in Figure 2.

Figure 2. Fixed support applied at the botom of enclosure

6. Mesh the model and solve the modal analysis for first 20 modes and plot the
deformation results for all the modes.
7. On the Project Schematic page, now drag and drop a Harmonic Response
Analysis on the Modal Analysis so that they share cell numbers 2,3,4 and 6th of
modal with 5th of the Harmonic analysis.
8. Apply displacement type base excitation to the fixed support boundary
condition:

9. Solve the harmonic analysis for a range of 0 to 1400Hz with Cluster Number =4.
• Plot the total deformation and frequency response result (for a particular
vertex on a body):

This example illustrates the measurement of deformation and frequency response
for electronics enclosure assembly subjected to horizontal excitation.
