THESIS ABSTRACT
PROJECT : Innovation center for Bamboo, Banswara

What are the possibilities of using bamboo in a state as hot as Rajasthan? How can
architecture help in reviving bamboo culture in Banswara? Bamboo and Banswara
have a very strong connection since history. The name of the city was derived from
‘bans’ which means bamboo in Hindi. With time the growth of bamboo declined
resulting in losing its significance. Bamboo as a material and construction systems are
losing their identity as the products are not that popularized and used by the people.
The major reasons for the decline of bamboo market is due to lack of innovation in the
works of the bamboo artisans. This issue can be addressed by an institution cum
commercial center for the bamboo artisans and the people interested in learning and
working with bamboo. The center will also spread information and embrace the
qualities of bamboo along with its multi-usage and wide range of products and
construction system.
Architecture is a key factor in the reciprocal relationship between environmental
change and innovation for a more sustainable future. The motivation for this thesis is
to bridge the gap between bamboo and construction in regions like Banswara and
spread a word of variable bamboo usage. This project specially focuses on uplifting
the bamboo artisans and promoting sustainable means for a better living. The purpose
of the project is to provide a platform for the artisans to grow by the means of an
indulging atmosphere. An attempt is made to create an environment that is flexible
and receptive for its users in the long run.
