In order to prevent overvoltage tripping, a braking resistor is used to convert this energy into heat. This resistor may be a part of the braking unit ori is connected to it ‘The braking unit is connected to the DC bus terminals ofthe drive. When the DC bus voltage reaches a pre- defined limit, the braking unit automatically turns on and prevents the DC bus voltage from continuing to increase. ‘The braking unit operates autonomously. The power supply ofthe electronics is integrated in the unit. “The braking unit is available in thee frame sizes: 4 frame size S$ SkW to 10 KW: integrated braking resistor for short braking operation: ‘external braking resistor ifthe inlograted braking resistor is not sufficient: + frame size A 10 KW to 20KW: —_ integrated braking resistor for short braking operation: external braking resistor if the integrated braking resistor is not sufficient: s0KW extemal braking resistor ‘¢ frame size B 100 kWbis 200 KW: external braking resistor Siemens AG _6SE7007.0Cx87-2000 a Bremesia/Graking Unt Boviebserttung Operating nstuctons Mounting, Canneston 08.98 2 Mounting, Connection io ‘+ Braking units are mounted side to side to SIMOVERT MASTER DRIVES on a G rail or using M6 screws. This thermal ‘contact may be connected to a fault input ofthe drive or to an automation system. CAUTION When braking resistors and braking units are combined, it must be guaranteed that the resistance of a resistor is not less than the minimum allowed resistance, else the braking unit may be destroyed! Higher values of the resistors are allowed. Under these circumstances the braking power will be reduced (P = V'IR) During operation the surface ofthe braking resistors may have temperatures of several 100" C. Therefore cooling air must not contain flammable or explosive items or gases. Ifa resistor is mounted to the wall the wall must not be flammable, WARNING If the thermo-contact ofthe external brake resistor is evaluated, the drive converter must be isolated from the line supply when the contact responds (e.g. by controling the main contactor via -X9:4,5; Fig. 2.5). 34 Definitions of the Power Ratings Braking Unit with extemal Resistor Braking Unit with internal Resistor P20. = Rated Power P20. = Rated Power 3. = Peak Power 5x P20 eak Power = 1,5 P20 PDB =0,25 x P20 = Steady State Power Rating 3,03 x P20 = Steady State Power Rating . e A A Ps 18 ps 1s 4 Poo 4 Po 1 1 Poe 025-1 on 0 + > “0 02 m0 * 01728 Rs cs Fig 24 Lond Characostes othe Braking Units a ‘Slemens AG_6E7087-60X87-2000, frase Braking Unt Operating instructions 008 Mentosng Fla | 4 Monitoring In the case of faults, the braking unit wil be locked, the fault relay (X38:4-5) is de-energized. Setting of the Voltage Limit Switch: ‘The Voltage Limit for braking may be adjusted in braking units which are rated for 380 V to 460 V and 500 V to 575 V, respectively. This may make sense if drive is operated from @ 380 / 400 V or from a 500 V line, because during braking the DC bus voltage increases only slightly. The voltage stress applied to motor insulation will be reduced. a ne NOTE For 1LA 1/516/8 typo SIEMENS motors the volage limit needs nat o be changed If the Voltage Limit Switch $1 is sett the lower iit, the braking power is reducod (P-V") ‘The Voltage Limit Switch $1 is located behind the front cover.
