Story Cubes can be used with groups or individuals, in summer camps or speaking clubs. There are some ideas how to make lessons fun using them: 1. Children take turns to throw the cubes. The first student creates the beginning of the story, others its logical or crazy continuation. 2. Everyone throws 2-3 cubes and makes a funny story of 3-4 sentences about yesterday, last weekend, summer vocations or about any future plans. The stories can also be about last news they've read on the internet (Facebook or Instagram) or about funny occasions with their friends. Variation: deal out one cube to every student and they create a story together about whatever they want. By the way students can either tell or write the stories! 3. Any grammar pattern can be drilled or practiced with the help of these cubes: throw them and ask questions about the pictures, make up sentences using necessary tense or studied grammar structure (E.g. | like apples, bananas, oranges and watermelons. | get up at 7 o'clock every day. The elf is wearing a red hat and green trousers. My dad has shaved his moustache this morning etc). Every picture is a part of a certain category (apple-fruit, snake-animals, Batman- superheroes etc). E.g. if you have a picture of milk, why not to recall all the drinks the children like? It will make the lesson more learner-centered and involve the participants in the process. Divide pupils into pairs, limit the time by 2-3 minutes, let them write a list of beverages which they know. When they have finished, every team names word by word crossing them out of the list. The words can’t be repeated! The last team to say the word is the winner. If there are no more words, children can invent them on the go, but don't let them think over for too long (10-15 sec). 4. The picture on the cube can be a starting point for a full statement within 1 minute as well. For example, if there is an image with a boy riding a bike, according to this, the student can speak about his summer holidays, hobbies and leisure, his favourite outdoor toys or how can children spend their time at the park or playground. The topic can be given by the teacher or chosen by students. You may also make this activity more engaging by organizing a short competition between kids: who can make more sentences on the topic for one minute is the winner.
