What is Communication

An exchange of views, ideas, thoughts etc. between two or more than two
people to ensure that the receiver understands message exactly the way the
sender wishes or intends him/her to understand

Why Do People Communicate?


People have some communication needs to achieve to communicate
including:
Physical Needs: People have strong inbuilt urge to talk to his fellow beings.
E.G when you are studying or doing some work alone, you feel after some
time the need to go and talk to someone. That is why solitary confinement
is considered the worst kind of punishment

Social Needs: refer to the need to have relationships with others

Identity Needs: Iidentity needs include our need to present ourselves to


others and be thought of in particular and desired ways

Relational Needs: the need to develop, maintain or end any relationship

Professional / Instrumental Needs: include needs that help us get things


done in our day-to-day lives and achieve short- and long-term goal. It also
refers to inform, request, order, to persuade etc.

When the purpose or goal of the communication –be it physical, social or
professional/ is achieved 100%

Difference between low level and high level Messages?


Low level messages are simple and straight like:
• Would you please get me a glass of water?
• I will be attending the Communication Class.
• I just finished eating my breakfast
• Do not send him the email today.
High Level messages are complex and difficult to understand as different
people will interpret it differently:

• We have to get at the truth of the matter.


• Isha isn't the type of person who gossips.
• People lost faith in banks.

• Communication is driven by culture and context

• Words do not carry meaning, meaning is in the mind
