BY RICK RENNER
In the introduction to this program series, filmed on location in western Turkey,
Rick Renner explores the ancient city of Ephesus and takes viewers on a fasci-
nating visit to the South Road, Philosopher’s Square, and the renowned School
of Tyrannus. These illustrative teachings will help you understand two works
of grace available for every believer; the New Testament pattern for being filled
with the Holy Spirit; the supernatural role of the Holy Spirit in your life; the
benefits of being filled with the Spirit; and what tongues are all about!
Unless otherwise indicated, all scripture quotations are taken from the
King James Version of the Bible.

A Note From
Rick Renner
I am on a personal quest to see a “revival of
the Bible” so people can establish their lives on
a firm foundation that will stand strong and
endure the test when end-time storm winds
begin to intensify.
In order to experience a revival of the Bible in
your personal life, it is important to take time
each day to read, receive, and apply Bible truths to your life. James tells us
that if we will continue in the perfect law of liberty — refusing to be for-
getful hearers, but determined to be mindful doers — we will be blessed
in our ways. As you watch or listen to the programs in this series and work
through this corresponding study guide, I trust you will search the Scrip-
tures and allow the Holy Spirit to help you hear something new from
God’s Word that applies specifically to your life. I encourage you to be a
doer of the Word He reveals to you. Whatever the cost, I assure you — it
will be worth it.
Thy words were found, and I did eat them;
and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart:
for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.

TOPIC
Two Works of Grace
for Every Believer
SCRIPTURES
1. Matthew 5:6 — Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after
righteousness: for they shall be filled.
2. John 20:19-22 — Then the same day at evening, being the first day of
the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assem-
bled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith
unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed
unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when
they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you:
as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said
this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy
Ghost.
3. Genesis 2:7 — And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the
ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man
became a living soul.
4. Ephesians 1:13, 14 — In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard
the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that
ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is
the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased
possession, unto the praise of his glory.
5. 1 Corinthians 6:19 — What? know ye not that your body is the
temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and
ye are not your own?
6. Luke 24:49 — And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon
you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with
power from on high.

much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost” (see Acts 19:2). These
disciples had repented of their sins and had been baptized by John, ex-
pressing faith in the Messiah they believed would eventually come.
Paul informed them that the Messiah indeed had come and His name was
Jesus Christ. Once they heard the Gospel message and believed on Christ,
Paul water-baptized them and laid his hands on them in prayer to receive
the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Acts 19:6 reveals, “…The Holy Ghost
came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.” Without
question, Paul knew these new believers needed to be filled with the Holy
Spirit immediately.
The same is true of believers today. To live the Christian life powerfully, it
is vital to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

with Him, it meant you had God’s approval. He examined the
contents of your heart and found nothing flawed or inferior.
And because everything was in order, He stamped you with the
Holy Spirit, which is His seal of approval. Anyone who has this
stamp is headed for special treatment. THIS seal means you be-
long to God and no one is to interfere with you as a “package.”
This “Holy Spirit stamp” means the postage is prepaid to get
you all the way to your ultimate destination. That means you
can be sure that once your journey with the Lord begins, you are
going to make it all the way to where God wants you to go! As
good as all of this already seems, it’s only the beginning of what
God has planned for us.
You see, the Holy Spirit is the first installment of our full
inheritance. In a certain sense, you could say the Holy Spirit is
God’s “down-payment” to show that He is serious and intends
to complete the deal, finalize all the papers, put the product in
His name, and finally make us His very own possession, with
no one having the ability ever to exercise any claims or liens
against us. When this whole process is finally wrapped up and
the deal is completely done, we’re all going to want to stand up
and give God a glorious round of applause for everything He
has done in our lives!
First Corinthians 6:19 says that once you are saved, “…your body is the
temple of the Holy Ghost.” The word “temple” is the Greek word naos, and
in ancient cultures, it described a highly decorated shrine or the inner sanctum
where a god lived. The moment you are saved, God’s Spirit moves inside
and takes up permanent residence! This is the first work of God’s grace.
STUDY QUESTIONS

1. In the time of the Old Testament, the Spirit of God came upon
certain people for a certain task. Describe the reason the Spirit of
God came upon Sampson (see Judges 15:11-20); Saul (see 1 Samuel
10:1-13); and David (see 1 Samuel 16:10-14). What was the result of
this experience in their lives?
2. Peace is the primary fruit of salvation. The moment we repent of our
sin and receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we have peace with God.
Explain how this peace with God is different than the peace of God
(see Philippians 4:6, 7; Colossians 3:15).

10. Acts 19:3-6 — And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye
baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then, said Paul, John
verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the
people, that they should believe on him which should come after him,
that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in
the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon
them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues,
and prophesied.
GREEK WORDS
1. “breathed on them” — ἐμφυσάω (emphusao): to breathe into; to
inflate
2. “power” — δύναμις (dunamis): explosive, superhuman power with
enormous energy that produces phenomenal, extraordinary, and
unparalleled results; the force of an entire army
SYNOPSIS
The apostle Paul spent two years in Ephesus ministering at the School of
Tyrannus, which was located in the heart of the city. Every morning and
afternoon he taught a steady stream of people who came to the school
seeking knowledge. Many signs and wonders took place during that time,
including the salvation of many. These same people were also filled with
the Holy Spirit.
God wants all believers everywhere to be filled with the explosive, su-
perhuman power of His Spirit — including you! The infilling of the Holy
Spirit is not a one-time event, but an ongoing experience in which we are
filled again and again. The Holy Spirit’s infilling unleashes a flood of di-
vine power that enables us to operate mightily in His special spiritual gifts
for the purpose of advancing God’s Kingdom.
In this lesson, the phrases “praying in tongues,” “praying in the spirit,” and
“speaking in the spirit” are used interchangeably.
It Happened in Samaria
In Acts chapter 8, which took place about one year after Pentecost, we see
that Philip went to Samaria to preach the Gospel, and miracles took place.
Demonic spirits were cast out of people, many who were lame began to
walk, and those with palsies (paralysis) were healed. “When they believed

name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women” (Acts
8:12).
People heard the Gospel and saw firsthand the power of God manifested.
They repented of their sins and received Christ into their lives. They were
saved and subsequently baptized in water as a confirmation. They were
born again and on their way to Heaven. They had peace with God, but they
also needed His power.
Acts 8:14 and 15 reveals, “Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem
heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them
Peter and John: who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that
they might receive the Holy Ghost.” Salvation, the first work of grace, had
been experienced by the Samaritans. The second work of grace had not
been experienced — until Peter and John “laid they their hands on them,
and they received the Holy Ghost” (Acts 8:17). This is a reference to this
second work of grace that is called the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
When the apostles laid their hands on the people, something supernatural
happened. It was so visible and tangible that a professed sorcerer named
Simon offered Peter and John money to empower him to do the same.
Peter rejected Simon’s offer, declaring, “Thou hast neither part nor lot in
this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God” (v. 21). The word
“matter” confirms the Samaritans spoke in tongues. It is the Greek word
logos, meaning words or speaking. Peter literally told Simon, “You have
neither part nor lot in this kind of speaking.”

The pattern of receiving Christ (salvation), followed by baptism in the
Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues, was God’s way of working in the
Church throughout the entire book of Acts.
It is still Christ’s pattern of working in our lives today.

speaketh.
2. John 4:24 — God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must wor-

an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth
the church.
4. 1 Corinthians 14:18 — I thank my God, I speak with tongues more
than ye all.
GREEK WORDS
1. “edifieth” — οἰκοδομή (oikodome): an architectural term meaning
to enlarge or amplify a house; it depicts the careful following of an
architectural plan to enlarge, increase, or amplify; to edify; to improve;
to leave in an improved condition
SYNOPSIS
In the heart of Ephesus, at a place called the Philosopher’s Square, the
apostle Paul and Aquila and Priscilla spent a lot of time ministering the
Gospel to those who were hungry to know more about Christ. It was also
a place where Paul taught on the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

Again and again, nonbelievers witnessed the manifestation of the power of
God. Undoubtedly, they had questions. Hence, they gathered at Philos-
opher’s Square to hear Paul teach. It was to the Church of Ephesus that
Paul wrote many amazing truths about the Holy Spirit — about being
sealed with the Spirit, being filled with the Spirit, and the power of pray-
ing in the spirit.
Since the early believers in Ephesus needed the infilling of the Holy
Spirit, we certainly need that same experience today.
In this lesson, the phrases “praying in tongues,” “praying in the spirit,” and
“speaking in the spirit” are used interchangeably.

Paul went on to say in First Corinthians 14:4, “He that speaketh in an
unknown tongue edifieth himself….” The word “edify” is a Greek archi-
tectural term that was used to describe increasing the size of an existing
building. When a building was not big enough, a builder would break
out its walls to expand the square footage. Paul uses this word “edifieth”
to indicate that when we pray in tongues, we expand our spiritual walls,
increasing our spiritual capacity.
Realize that Paul, whom God used to write these verses, said, “I thank my
God, I speak with tongues more than ye all” (1 Corinthians 14:18). By
speaking in tongues, Paul edified himself greatly. He greatly expanded his
spiritual capacity and was able to take in so much revelation that he wrote
nearly two thirds of the New Testament.

1. You are a spirit being who has a soul and lives in a body. In both First
Corinthians 6:19 and Second Corinthians 6:16, it says that the body
is “the temple of the Holy Spirit” — it’s the physical house in which
He lives and works. Be honest. How would you describe the way you
are taking care of the Holy Spirit’s house? Is there an area of your
body you have neglected that is affecting your soul and spirit? If so,
where? What steps do you feel the Holy Spirit is prompting you to
take to get His house — your body — in order?
2. Very likely you have heard someone say, “Do I have to speak in
tongues?” What might cause a person to shy away from wanting the
privilege of being able to communicate spirit-to-Spirit with the Cre-
ator of the universe? After studying this lesson, what words of wisdom
and encouragement could you now offer someone else?

The Benefits of Being Filled
With the Spirit
SCRIPTURES
1. Ephesians 5:15-21 — See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as
fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the
Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled
with the Spirit. Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submitting yourselves one to another
in the fear of God.
2. Matthew 12:34 — O generation of vipers, how can ye being evil,
speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth
speaketh.
GREEK WORDS
1. “walk” — περιπατέω (peripateo): to walk around; to habitually walk;
one’s lifestyle
2. “circumspectly” — ἀκριβῶς (akribos): accurately; carefully; exactly;
circumspectly
3. “fools” — ἄσοφος (asophos): unenlightened; unintelligent; foolish
4. “wise” — σοφός (sophos): enlightened; intelligent; cultivated
5. “redeeming” — ἐξαγοράζω (exagoradzo): to buy back; to redeem; to
make the most of
6. “unwise” — ἄφρων (aphron): unintelligent; brainless
7. “understanding” — συνίημι (suniemi): a coming together; putting all
the pieces together; understanding
8. “drunk” — μεθύσκω (methusko): to excessively drink alcohol; a
drunkard
SYNOPSIS
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is an amazing experience! The Spirit
influences everything in our lives — the way we see, hear, think, and act.
This is so important that the apostle Paul urged the church of Ephesus to
be filled with the Spirit continually. History shows that they started in the
power of God, and they continued in the power of God for many years.
However, when Paul wrote to the church of Ephesus, they were experienc-
ing some major problems. They were dealing with gossip and backbiting
that was producing malice and bitterness in hearts of many. Although they
had been walking with the Lord for a long time, they were not acting very
mature at the time of Paul’s writing. Paul identified their ungodly attitudes
and behavior in Ephesians chapter 4.

Live Life on a Higher Level
In Ephesians 5:15, Paul said, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not
as fools, but as wise.” The word “walk” is from the Greek term peripateo,
meaning to walk around, to habitually walk, and it also referred to one’s
lifestyle. Essentially, Paul was calling the Ephesians to move up higher and
stop treating each other so badly. He was urging them to begin living a
new lifestyle.
How were they to walk? Paul said “circumspectly” — the Greek word
akribos, which means accurately, carefully, or exactly. Then he said, “…Not
as fools, but as wise.” The word “fools” is from the Greek word asophos, and
it simply indicates unenlightened or unintelligent. The word wise is sophos,
meaning intelligent, cultured, or enlightened. Paul was saying, “Quit all this
foolish behavior and stop acting unintelligent. Begin acting like the intel-
ligent, cultured believers I know you can be.”
Paul continued in verse 16 saying, “Redeeming the time, because the days
are evil.” “Redeeming” is the Greek word exagoradzo — a combination of
the word ex, meaning out, and agoradzo, meaning I buy. The word exago-
radzo literally means to buy back, to redeem, or to make the most of. Basically,
Paul was saying, “Buy back the time you’ve lost and make the most of each
opportunity you still have.” The Ephesians had lost or forsaken opportuni-
ties to enjoy and appreciate each other because of their poor behavior.
26 | STUDY GUIDE
and it signifies an overwhelmingly good feeling about someone or something;
a free-flowing thankfulness and gratitude. Instead of being ungrateful and
focusing on what we don’t have, we are very thankful and focused on what
we do have.
In verse 21, we see that “submitting yourselves one to another in the fear
of God” is also a result of being filled with the Spirit. The word “sub-
mitting” is the Greek word hupotasso, and it means obedience to authority;
submission to authority in any context; one who is under authority; to defer to
someone else. When we are filled with and controlled by the Holy Spirit, it
makes it easier for us to submit to authority and defer to others.
These life-producing characteristics reflect just some of the many benefits
of being filled with the Spirit.

TOPIC
The Supernatural Role of the Holy
Spirit in Your Life
SCRIPTURES
1. Ephesians 5:18 — And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess;
but be filled with the Spirit.
2. Romans 8:26 — Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for
we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself
maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
GREEK WORDS
1. “what” — τι (ti): minute, minuscule detail, exactly, explicitly
2. “ought” — δεῖ (dei): an obligation or necessity
3. “intercession” — ὑπερεντυγχάνω (huperentugchano): to fall into a

dilemma, he joins the victim and implements a rescue and deliver-
ance for the one in trouble; conveys the idea of a rescue operation;

being delivered from imminent danger.
SYNOPSIS
The church of Ephesus was started through the ministry of Paul in the
First Century. During that time, a revival of magnificent proportions
broke out in the city and eventually affected the entire province of Asia.
Thousands upon thousands of people were saved, many of the sick were
radically healed, and people were set free from demonic bondage. What
took place was truly supernatural.
In Ephesians 5:18, Paul said to believers, both then and now, “Be not
drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” As we
learned in the last lesson, the Greek language indicates being continually
filled to the full with the Holy Spirit. Regardless of how much of the
Spirit you had previously, God wants you to have more and more of the
Spirit with each passing day. He wants you to be being filled continually.
When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you are positioned for the su-
pernatural to take place.
In Romans 8:26, the apostle Paul said, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth
our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but
the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot
be uttered.” Here we discover our primary problem in life — ignorance.
We often don’t know what to do, what to say, or what to pray in the situa-
tions in which we find ourselves.

STUDY QUESTIONS
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth
not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
— 2 Timothy 2:15
1. For believers in the Early Church, receiving the baptism in the Holy
Spirit was viewed as mandatory if they were going to walk in the
power of God. Why do you think this was the case? How do you see
the baptism in the Holy Spirit — as optional or mandatory? Explain
your answer.
2. Understanding the purpose, power, and outcomes of praying in the
spirit is priceless. Take a few minutes to read and meditate on these
two passages: Romans 8:26 and 27 and First Corinthians 2:9-13.
What is the Holy Spirit revealing to you in these verses about His
work in and through your life?
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
