கதைமாந்தர் குறித்த அறிமுகம்

ஹொராசியோ ஒலிவெய்ரா (Horacio Oliveira)

நாவலின் முக்கியக் கதாபாத்திரம், கதைசொல்லி. ஒலிவெய்ரா தனது 40 களில் இருக்கும்

அர்ஜென்டினாவைச் சேர்நத ் வன். லா மாகா என்றழைக்கப்படும் லூசியாவின் காதலன். உண்மையில்
பாரீஸுக்குப் படிக்கும் நோக்கத்துடன் வந்து பிரெஞ்சுத் தலைநகரின் மாயங்களால் தடம் மாறியவன்.
மரபொழுக்கங்களுக்குக் கட்டுப்படாத வாழ்ககை் வாழ்பவன். வலுவான, அறிவார்ந்த சிந்தனை கொண்டவன்,
அது பல விஷயங்களில் பொருளோடு பேச அவனுக்கு உதவுகிறது. பாரீஸின் தெருக்களில் அலைந்து திரிவான்,
சர்பப் ன்ட் கிளப் எனப்படும் நண்பர்கள் கூட்டமைப்பில் உள்ள தனது மற்ற நண்பர்களுடன் ஆழ்ந்த
உரையாடல்களில் ஈடுபடுவான், திரைப்படங்கள், இசை நிகழ்ச்சிகளுக்குச் செல்வான். விஷயங்களின்
முழுமைக்கான தொடர்ச்சியான தேடலில் இருந்து தன்னைத் திசைதிருப்ப முடியாதிருப்பவன். கடிதப்
போக்குவரத்துகளை ஒழுங்குபடுத்துபவனாகப் பணிசெய்தும் அர்ஜென்டினாவிலிருந்து பணக்கார
உறவினர்கள் அனுப்பும் பணத்திலும் வாழ்கிறான்.

லா மாகா, லூசியா (La Maga, Lucia)

உருகுவே நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்தவள். லீடர் எனப்படும் ஜெர்மானிய வகைப் பாடல்களைப் பாடும் பாடகியாக
வேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கத்துடன் தனது மகனுடன் பாரீஸுக்கு வந்தவள். ஒலிவெய்ரா மற்றும் அவனது
சர்பப் ன்ட் கிளப் நண்பர்கள் போல இலக்கியமோ, நாகரிகமோ அறியாதவள். கொர்த்தசாரின் கூற்றுப்படி, லா
மாகாவின் பாத்திரம் ஜெர்மானிய எழுத்தாளரும் மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளருமான எடித் அரோன் (Edith Aron) சாயலில்
உருவாக்கப்பட்டது.

ரோகேமதூர் (Rocamadour)

லா மாகாவின் மகன். இவனது உண்மையான பெயர் அவனது அப்பாவின் பெயரே, ஃபிரான்சிஸ்கோ.

ரோகேமதூர் என்ற பெயர் லா மாகா வைத்தது. இவனைக் கவனித்துக் கொள்ள இயலாமல் லா மாகா, ஐரீன்
எனும் தாதியிடம் ஒப்படைக்கிறாள். இவனது உடல்நிலை மோசமான பின்னரே லா மாகா இவனைத் தன்
பொறுப்பில் ஏற்கிறாள்.

இட்டியென் (Etienne)

(ஸ்டீபன் என்ற பெயரின் பிரெஞ்சுமொழி வடிவம்) ஓவியன், ஒலிவெய்ரா பாரீஸில் இருக்கும்போது

அவனது நெருங்கிய நண்பர்களில் ஒருவன். சர்ப்பன்ட் கிளப்பில் இருப்பவன். ஒலிவெய்ராவுடன் இலக்கியம்,
இசை, ஓவியம் குறித்த தொடர் உரையாடல்களில் ஈடுபடுபவன். 1955 ஆம் ஆண்டில் கொர்தத ் சாருக்கு எடித்
அரோன் மூலம் அறிமுகமாகி பின்பு அவருடன் ஆழ்ந்த நட்பை வளர்த்துக் கொண்ட செர்ஹியோ தெ
காஸ்ட்ரோ (Sergio de Castro) எனும் காட்சிக் கலைஞரின் சாயலில் இட்டியெனின் கதாபாத்திரம்
உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஓசிப் கிரெகொரோவியஸ் (Ossip Gregorovius)

ருமேனியாவைச் சேர்ந்த கிரெகொரோவியஸ் பாரீஸில் வசிப்பவன், சர்ப்பன்ட் கிளப்பில் இருப்பவன்.

இந்தப்பாத்திரத்தில் குறிப்பிடப்பட வேண்டிய விஷயம் இவனுக்கு மூன்று வெவ்வேறு நகரங்களைச் சேர்ந்த
மூன்று தாய்கள் உண்டெனக் கூறுகிறான். கிரெகொரோவியஸ் ஓர் அறிவுஜீவி, கிளப்பின் மற்ற
உறுப்பினர்களைப் போலவே. பல சந்தர்ப்பங்களில் மொழியின் சிக்கல்கள் குறித்து ஒலிவெய்ராவுடன்
வாதிடுகிறான்.
ரோனல்ட் (Ronald)

அமெரிக்காவைச் சேர்ந்த பியானோ இசைக் கலைஞன். ஜாஸ் மற்றும் பீபாப் வகை இசையில்
தேர்ந்தவன். பாரீஸில் தனது மனைவி பாப்ஸுடன் வசிப்பவன், சர்ப்பன்ட் கிளப்பில் இருப்பவன்.

பாப்ஸ் (Babs)

அமெரிக்காவைச் சேர்ந்த மட்பாண்டக் கலைஞர். பாரீஸில் தனது கணவனான ரோனல்டுடன்

வசிக்கிறாள். சர்ப்பன்ட் கிளப்பில் இருப்பவள்.

கய் மோனாட் (Guy monod)

இட்டியெனின் நண்பன். எப்போதேனும் சர்ப்பன்ட் கிளப் சந்திப்புகளுக்கு வருபவன்.

வாங் (Wong)

சர்பப் ன்ட் கிளப்பில் உள்ள வாங் சீன வம்சாவளியைச் சேர்ந்தவன். எப்போதும் புத்தகங்கள் நிறைந்த
ஒரு பெட்டியைச் சுமப்பவன். 1905 இல் பெய்ஜிங்கில் நடத்தப்பட்ட மரணதண்டனை தொடர்பான பல
புகைப்படங்களை பணப்பையில் வைத்திருப்பவன்.

பெரிகோ ரொமீரோ (Perico Romero)

சர்பப் ன்ட் கிளப்பில் உள்ள மற்றுமொரு ஓவியன், இட்டியெனின் நண்பன்.

போலா (Pola)

பிரெஞ்சுப் பெண், ஒலிவெய்ராவின் காதலி, லா மாகா அவளை ஒலிவெய்ராவிடமிருந்து வூடூ

பொம்மை மூலம் பிரிக்க முயற்சி செய்கிறாள். போலா பின்னர் புற்றுநோயால் பாதிக்கப்படுகிறாள். இது லா
மாகாவிடம் பெரும் குற்ற உணர்வை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது.

பெர்த் த்ரெபா (Berthe Trepat)

பிரெஞ்சு பியானோக் கலைஞர். இவரது இசைநிகழ்ச்சியில் ஒலிவெய்ரா இவரைச் சந்திக்கிறான்.

ஒலிவெய்ராவின் கூற்றுப்படி மோசமான கலைஞர்.

வேலன்டின் (Valentine)

பெர்த் த்ரெபாவின் துணைவர், பெர்த் த்ரெபாவின் இசைநிகழ்ச்சிகளை ஏற்பாடு செய்பவர்.

Morelli

He is an old writer, with a certain transcendence, whom the members of the club study and admire.  In the
section "On the side over there", Morelli is run over, and Oliveira and Etienne go to visit him at the
hospital. Morelli asks them to come to his house to order a book and take it to his publisher.  When
Oliveira raises the risk of having the book disordered, Morelli affirms that his book can be read as each
reader wishes. In that sense, it makes us think of Cortázar himself, who proposes certain freedoms in the
way of reading Hopscotch. In fact, there are several indications that lead us to think that Morelli is
the alter egoby Julio Cortázar. Without going any further, the problem that Morelli raises regarding the
need for a renewal of literary language was also expressed by Cortázar himself on several occasions.

Rosemary parakeet

He is another member of the Snake Club. Perico is Spanish and, like most of the members of the Club, he
is also a lover of literature. Oliveira defines Perico as a man in need of certainties, not very close to
abstractions.

Emmanuele (the clochard)

She is a woman who lives on the streets and who usually sleeps under one of the bridges on the banks of
the Seine River. Oliveira and la Maga go to see how Emmanuele woos Célestin, another clochard . After
Rocamadour's death, Horacio goes to sit under the Emmanuele bridge to think a bit about his
situation. There he stays chatting and smoking with the clochard . In the end, she will perform oral sex on
Oliveira, and the two will end up in detention.

பயணி ( Manolo,Traveler)

He is the best friend of Horacio Oliveira. They have known each other since youth. It makes him angry to
be called Traveler ("traveler" in English), since he would love to travel and see the world, but so far he
has practically not left Argentina. He lives in Buenos Aires with his wife, Talita. Traveler works in a
circus and later in a madhouse. He is a lover of literature and admires Oliveira for his intellectual capacity
and for not submitting to the frameworks imposed by society. At the same time, this way of being of
Horacio brings him problems when it comes to having to communicate with him. Oliveira considers him
his doppelgänger , that is, his double. When Oliveira kisses Talita, Traveler reacts with a certain
resignation because he understands that Horacio is mentally unbalanced.

Talita

She is Traveler's wife. Talita is a pharmacist and also works in the circus first and in the asylum later.  At
first she is suspicious of Oliveira, but after some talks about writers and film directors, she strikes a
friendship with him. Once in the madhouse, Oliveira mistakes her for La Maga and kisses her.  What
bothers Talita most about this situation is the discomfort that she feels being the "zombie" of La
Maga. Horacio also mistakes her for Lucia when he sees her playing hopscotch that is painted on the floor
of the asylum patio.

Gekrepten

She is Horacio Oliveira's girlfriend in Buenos Aires. Gekrepten is Argentine and is always excessively
passive in front of Horacio. She lives with Oliveira in a room that is right in front of the Traveler's
window. In chapter 40 there is a rather specific description of Gekrepten: "Gekrepten (...) fattened
impeccable mates, and although he made love and asciutta pasta very badly , he had other relevant
domestic qualities (...)" (p. 254 ). Like La Maga, Gekrepten shows deep devotion to Oliveira.

Mr. Ferraguto (the Director)

He is the owner of the circus where Traveler and Talita initially work and, later, Oliveira. Then he buys a
psychiatric clinic and takes the three of them to work there.

Cuca ferraguto

She is the wife of Mr. Ferraguto. He is present during the signing of the transfer of the clinic. She, like
Traveler, Talita and Oliveira, also works in her husband's psychiatric clinic. She is described as a woman
closely linked to a traditional scale of values, capable of being scandalized in the face of any situation that
was outside of those parameters.

Dr. Sheepdog

He is a doctor who works in Mr. Ferraguto's psychiatric clinic. From time to time, he plays poker with the
Director and Traveler.

Remorino

He is a nurse who works in the psychiatric clinic. Traveler and Oliveira consider him a good man. Every
so often, Remorino goes down to the morgue and has a beer, which he keeps in the refrigerators where,
eventually, they will put the dead. It's pretty clear that Remorino has a drinking problem. On the other
hand, in one of those nights of conversation and alcohol, Oliveira and Traveler discover that Remorino is
a great reader of the Argentine writer Roberto Arlt.

Ceferino Piriz

He is a writer about whom Oliveira and Traveler argue. The latter, above all, is dedicated to studying
it. As an anecdote, it is worth mentioning that Ceferino Piriz really existed: he was a man who wrote an
essay entitled "The light of world peace" for a UNESCO contest in which Cortázar was a judge.  The truth
is that Ceferino was diagnosed "mentally insane", but the writer of Rayuela found his essay so original
that he decided to honor it by having both Oliveira and Traveler discuss and study it, mainly in chapter
129.

Don Crespo

He is a friend of Traveler. His house has a patio where both Talita and Traveler and Oliveira usually meet
to drink mate and listen to old records. Don Crespo considers them crazy, but he enjoys their
company. He also rents rooms both to Mrs. Gatusso and to other men and women.

Mrs. Gatusso

She is a neighbor of Oliveira and the Traveler. She is constantly presented as that stereotype of an
ordinary woman, preferably of a certain age and attached to her neighborhood, faithful to her customs and
without the slightest desire to change. At the same time, he is scandalized by anything that falls outside of
those traditional parameters.

Inmate 18
He is an intern at the psychiatric clinic where Oliveira works, who helps Horacio fill his room with traps
for when Traveler arrives.

Don Lopez

He is an old man who is admitted to the psychiatric hospital where Oliveira works and who permanently
carries a dove in his hand.
