LINNAEAN HIERARCHY
A system in which the names associated with the nested levels in the
classification denote rank
Same result is achieved through a system of indentation, the
degree of indentation denoting rank in the hierarchy
Indentation requires a visual presentation in order to understand
rank
In this system, one need only remember the rank order of the
names used to define the hierarchy
Uses a limited number of levels (ranks) reflecting nesting of groups
within groups

LINNAEAN HIERARCHY
The 10 ed. of Systema Naturae (1758) included this systematic
hierarchy:
KINGDOM
CLASS
ORDER
‘GENUS
SPECIES
VARIETY

LINNAEAN HIERARCHY
Universally Agreed-on-Rule: No taxon should contain subordinate
taxa of an equal or higher rank
Often bent to accommodate asymmetrical, pectinate groups above
the level of families
Example:
Class Aves is sister group to a clade of saurischian dinosaurs,
which presents a problem if one wants to recognize Dinosauria
as an Order

Later authors incorporated more categories above & below the level
of order:

MODERN LINNAEAN HIERARCHY
BOTANY adds the:
Subgeneric ranks of Section & Series
Subspecific ranks of Variety & Form
ZOOLOGY recognizes the:
Trinomial designations for subspecies following the rules for
species-group names
But not the Infra-Subspecific Names seen in Botany

MODERN LINNAEAN HIERARCHY
To facilitate the determination of
rank of the family-group level
(names from superfamily to
subtribe), the names bear unique
suffixes in zoological & botanical
nomenclature
