Coral Reefs can be defined as large strips of wave resistant rocks built up by carbonate
organisms (coral polyps) lying close to the surface of the sea, cemented together to form physical
structures. For coral reefs to grow, clear clean salt water is needed along with warm temperature,
a hard surface, sunlight, high oxygen concentration and shallow waters. There are three types of
coral reefs, including atoll reefs, fringing reefs and barrier reefs. Examples can be seen in various
countries of the Caribbean; Bucco Reef in Trinidad and Tobago, Coral Gardens in Dominica and
the Belize Barrier Reef.
