Arudra - 6 th Star

Thiruvathirai - Arudra [Gemini 6-40' to Gemini 20-00']

Arudra Nakshatra ( Betelgeuse) stays in Gemini sign

from 6: 40 degrees to 20 degrees. Ardra Nakshatra rises in the third week of the month of June. This
Nakshatra is at it’s apex from 9 to 11 PM in the month of February. Nirayan Sun enters this Nakshatra on
21st June. This Nakshatra seems like a diamond in the sky and comprises of only one star. Some scholars
even see it as a drop of a tear in the sky.

The presiding deity the Rudra, the wielder of the trident. Symbol- a teardrop. The ruling planet is Rahu.
The basic meaning of Ardra is wet or charged with water. ARDRA is a sharp natured star, earthly in
nature, and can be translated as "the teardrop," indicating one who can cause others pain. The class of
person it represents is the hunter and animal-killer. This star can indicate one who torments others, or
one who feels for the suffering of others, but usually the former indication holds true.

Ardra means moisture. Moisture helps in forming clouds after a period of extreme heat. Sun entering
this Nakshatra symbolises the end of summers and beginning of monsoon. Plant life flourishes because
of rains. A good harvest can be seen in the fields and even the people remain happy. Some scholars have
associated Ardra Nakshatra with a drop of tear or sweat. According to the, summers make a person cry
as there is no food and water. A person also sweats because of the immense heat.

In reality, any kind of moisture, coolness or wetness is known as Ardra. Ardra Nakshatra explains the fact
that a person should forget the past and move on. It also makes a person understand about
determination, patience etc. Some texts also compare Ardra Nakshatra with a human head.

When Surya enters Arudra the earth is said to be starting its menstrual course that is Ambobachi. Arudra
means wet or surcharged with water, that is fat. Because the earth is running her menstrual course
there are teardrops falling one after another. From Rudra comes all suffering, persecutions and
oppressions, anger, ferocity of countenance or hideousness of noise. Rudra is another name of Siva, the
Five Faced (Panchanana).

In knowledge, asceticism, renunciation, as also in enjoyment, he is the supreme consummation of all

desires. He is a blue-throated one, the wielder of the most tremendous powers, what could not be
attempted far less achieved by other Gods, when the churned Ocean at the time of Samudra Manthan
exhaled poison Siva achieved quite simply by holding the exhalation in his throat. On one side he is the
symbol of the most perfect placidity and serenity, on the other hand he is the symbol of all that is
terrible. He holds the great serpent on his head and on his forehead crescent Chandra with his sweet-
soft light. He is at the same time the most peaceful and also the most terrible. And in all these are to be
traced the intrinsic characteristics of Arudra. Superficially, on the surface of it, Arudra stands for
suffering, hardness, cruelty, murder, prison, theft, adultery etc. The root characteristic is oppression-in
order to purify. All male kidney trouble and connected urethral disease comes within the jurisdiction of
Arudra; so also uterine diseases of the female. It represents the skull of Kalapurusha with hair on it.
Ardra individuals are very much influenced by Rudra or Shiva. Shiva on one hand is placid and calm and
is considerate towards the well being of the world, while on the other hand is also known as the
destructor or the annihilator. He consumed all the poison thrown out as part of the “Samudra manthan”
and protected the whole world from it , and at the same time when he is angry his “tandav” can bring
annihilation of the whole world. Ardra nakshatra people are found to possess these characteristics in
