Title: Spectrophotometric Analysis of Aspirin

Objective: To determine the amount of aspirin in a commercial aspirin product.

Results:
Mass of acetylsalicylic acid used: 401.3mg
Solution Concentration Absorbanc
(mg/L) e
A(1ml) 16.05 0.126
B(2ml) 32.10 0.275
C(3ml) 48.16 0.410
D(4ml) 64.21 0.565
E(5ml) 80.26 0.724

Unknown 19.11 0.178

solution

M1 = 401.3mg / 0.25L
      = 1605.2mg/L
M1V1 = M2V2
(1605.2mg/L)(0.005L) = M2 (0.10L)
                                M2 = 80.26mg/L
The concentrations for B,C and D was obtained by substituting the value of V1 as 0.004L,
0.003L ,0.002L and 0.001L

From the graph plotted,

Molar absorptivity for aspirin at 530 nm, ε = 9.313x10-3cm-1ppm-1
A = ε l CAspirin
0.178 = 9.313x10-3cm-1ppm-1 x 1cm x CAspirin
CAspirin=19.11mg/L
Thus,
M1V1 = M2V2
M1(0.005L) = (19.11) (0.10L)
             M1 = 382.2mg/L
M1 = mass / volume
382.2mg/L = mass / 0.25L
Mass of acetylsalicylic acid in the commercial aspirin product: 95.55mg
Amount of aspirin in unknown solution: 95.55mg
Accepted value: 100.00mg
Percentage error: 4.45mg
Conclusion:
The amount of aspirin in a commercial aspirin product was successfully determined to be
95.55mg with a percentage error of 4.45mg.
