1. Before beginning this procedure always perform the following steps to ensure patient safety
2. Perform hand hygiene provide patient privacy introduce yourself
3. Use 2 patient identifiers
4. Verify allergy status perform environmental safety check
5. Ensure proper body mechanics gather all supplies
6. Provide patient education
7. Verify doctor’s order
8. Assess for procedure need and explain procedure to patient
9. Educate patient about the rationale of procedure and associated adverse reactions

Materials needed for inserting an indwelling retention

 catheter
 fast blanket
 gloves
 urinary catheter kit

The procedure
1. Place supplies at bedside position patient to optimize safety and privacy while allowing easy
catheter placement
2. Place bath blanket over patient and pull top linens under blanket down to foot of bed
3. Assess need for perennial cleaning path patient
4. Move ankles up and to the side
5. Open catheterization kit
6. Place drape between patients legs
7. Done sterile gloves
8. Open packet of antiseptic solution and pour onto cotton balls
9. Prepare lubricant attach prefilled syringe two catheters balloon port
10. Spread labia minora with non-dominant hand to expose urinary meatus
11. Clean mucosa with dominant hands with one downward stroke of each antiseptic soap cotton ball
12. Wipe the labia furthest away first and always wipe from front to back
13. Remember not to cross the sterile field when disposing items in the appropriate receptacle
14. Hold catheter with sterile dominant hand while stabilizing labia minora
15. Lubricate catheter and insert catheter into urethra while patient bears down
16. Advance until you see urine then advance an additional 1 to 2 inches
17. Release labia and hold on to catheter with non-dominant hand inflate balloon and gently pull
catheter
18. Secure catheter into patients thigh
19. Adjust gown
20. Attach drainage system below level of patient's bladder to bed
21. Remove drape, adjust linens and remove\ back blanket making sure patient is comfortable
22. Dispose of soiled supplies ensure safe environment
23. Return bed to lowest height with brakes locked and appropriate side rails up, and put call light in
in reach
24. wash hands
