Tutorial Sheet #1 (2019)

1. a. 220mL of an aqueous solution of 0.025M potassium manganate(VII) is required for

an analytical method. How much potassium manganate(VII) should be weighed out?

b. What is the concentration of manganese, expressed in units of percent (w/v), in this solution?

2. What is the mass in milligrams of solute present in:

a. 26mL of 0.25M sucrose (molar mass = 342)
b. 656mL of a solution that contains 4.96ppm Pb(NO 3)2

3. A series of five blank analyses for an analytical method yields the following results:
0.21, 0.23, 0.19, 0.20 and 0.19 ppm
If a sample is analysed by the same method and a result of 0.28 ppm is obtained, can you be
99% sure that the analyte is indeed present in the sample? Explain your answer with relevant
calculations.

4. The label on a bottle of white rum states that it contains “63% alcohol v/v”. If the density of
ethanol is 789 kg/m3, express this ethanol concentration in units of:
a. ppm
b. Molarity

5. A can of insecticide lists cyfluthrin (C22H18Cl2FNO3) as an active ingredient, at a concentration of

0.015% w/v. Calculate the cyfluthrin concentration of the contents of the can in units of
millimoles per litre.
