Introduction

Watertight doors awareness training material

In our quest for safer, smarter and greener maritime operations on the world’s oceans DNV GL & GARD rescue
services, are continually looking for ways we can help our customers and partners improve safety on their vessels.
Power-operated watertight doors are an essential part of keeping ships safe, working to block and contain incoming
water in the event of an incident that causes to damage to the vessel. However, our analysis shows that crew and
superintendents could benefit from being more aware of how they should and shouldn’t use power-operated
watertight doors.
Therefore, experts at DNV GL & GARD rescue services have compiled a package of training material to raise
awareness on the correct use of power-operated watertight doors. We have produced a video and a presentation
that identify the major risks, technical and operational issues in using power-operated watertight doors, and some
steps the maritime industry can take to address them. These insights are supported by case study information and
templates for work orders.
We would like to urge you to pass the training toolkit to the appropriate stakeholders in your organisation.
