2. Safety Requirements
Any hazards or concerns identified during site visits should be reported directly to the Subcontractor Coordinator,
Ceragon Coordinator and Smartfren PIC if impact to Smartfren Network.

2.1. Electrostatic Discharge Considerations & Wrist Strap

The static electricity generated by the human body can damage the electrostatic sensitive components on the
circuit board, such as the large-scale integrated circuit (LIC).
The human body generates an electrostatic discharge (ESD) due to body movement, friction between the shoes
and floor, friction between clothes, and contact with plastic objects. ESD remains on the human body for a long
time.
Before touching the device or holding the boards, circuit boards, or ASICs, wear an ESD wrist strap and make sure
that it is properly grounded. This can prevent the sensitive components from being damaged by the static
electricity on the human body.

Figure Error! No text of specified style in document.-1 ESD Wrist Strap

2.2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Be sure to:

• Wear the required personal protective equipment necessary for the job:
• Wear helmet at all times!
• Wear harness at all times when working at heights!
• Proper shoes!
• Proper weights carrying!
• Always maintain 3 points of contact!
• Always connect harness to lifeline!

2.3. Working at Heights

Working at Heights is any work above ground level where there is risk of personal injury through falling or a risk to
people below the work site being injured by objects falling.

You are working at height if you:

• are working on a ladder or a flat roof;

• could fall through a fragile surface;
• could fall into an opening a hole in the ground.

Working at Heights guidelines

• First, take into account the weather conditions!
• Check the worksite is safe, every time.
• Take steps to stop materials or equipment from falling or sliding.
• Store equipment and accessories safely so they won’t cause injury if they are disturbed or moved
• Plan for emergencies and rescue or know the established plan.
• Prevent entrance of personnel beneath working areas when working on roofs or surfaces above

3. Antenna Installation
3.1. Antenna Assembly

• Antenna design vary from manufacturer to manufacturer

• This results with changes to:

- Assembly procedure
- Dimensions

• Before installing any antenna always read, understand and follow the assembly and installation
instructions contained in the bulletin delivered with the antenna

• Confirm the dimensions and the assembled antenna weight before hoisting

Figure. Antenna Assembly

Antenna – Lubricants and Torques

Bolted Fasteners, Torque and Lock Nuts

• Correct antenna assembly is necessary to guarantee long term stability throughout its operational life. Pay
special attention to achieving the correct arrangement and tightening of all bolt fasteners, follow strictly the
instructions provided with the equipment in the form of drawings and bulletins.

• Torque data for each type of bolt fastener is provided by the antenna manufacturer, use it!

Grease, Lubricants and Thread Locking Compounds

• Become familiar with the proper application of greases, lubricants and thread locking compounds (i.e.
LOCTITE) that are variously used on a number of CERAGON components such as gaskets and bolted fasteners
for Antenna, ODU, Branching Box and Waveguide Assemblies. Full instructions are provided with each
assembly bulletin. Apply as instructed, use only where stated.

Thread Assemblies

Functions of a threaded assembly:

1. Create clamp force

2. Maintain clamp force

3. Allow disassembly

Why do threaded assemblies fail? Clamp force is not maintained & threaded assemblies loosen because of:

A. Gaps: To make the assembly possible, nuts and

bolts must have some tolerance, which creates
gaps between threads.

B. Vibration & side-to-side movement: These gaps

allow the parts to move from side-to-side when
exposed to vibration.

C. Expansion/contraction & loosening: Expansion

and contraction can also cause side-by-side
movement. This, in addition to vibration, leads to
loosening and ultimately disassembly of parts.

Disassembly is not always possible, because in certain conditions the nut and bolt can seize together. Seizing can
lead to:

• Corrosion, rust, when dealing with:

Humidity, High temperatures, Assembly of
different metals (galvanic corrosion)
• Galling (friction welding)

Antenna – Thread Locking Compounds (eg. Loctite)

• How does a thread locker work? Thread lockers are single-

component adhesives that cure in the absence of air and in contact
with active metal to form a tough thermoset plastic. They completely
fill all voids between the interfacing threads, which makes the
assembly an unitized component, prevents any movement between
threads, and ultimately prevents loosening.

• How do I use a thread locker? To achieve optimum performance all

parts must be clean and free of contaminants (e.g. oil, grease)

Installing Ultra High Performance Antenna

• Dual polarized feed horn for some UHX antennas have asymmetrical radiation patterns that produce a
lower side lobe on one side.

• In the example ANDREW feed horn shown here the ‘better side’ is the side marked in red, which, when
installed to the left or right can reduce any potential interference at that side.
• If a ‘better side’ has been specified ensure the feed horn has been correctly orientated before beginning to
align the antenna.

Figure. Example ANDREW Dual Polarized Feed Horn

3.2. Antenna Offset

• Offsetting antenna is simply orienting the dish either to the left side or right side of the pole mount. This
does not affect the antenna’s polarization.
• The offset option allows us to more stabilizing position of the antenna by side struts.
• Can simplify feeder installation and make access easier.
• With the antenna illustrated above, this is done by adjusting the mount frame at the rear of the antenna.
• In this example the main antenna dish is not rotated, but this can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

3.3. Side Strut

The function of a side strut is to transfer the wind loading on an antenna back to the tower structure. Side strut(s)
parallel to the boresight of the antenna will provide optimum stability for the antenna.

Installation of the Side Strut

• Mount the end of the antenna side strut parallel to the antenna direction
• The deviation angle should be within ≤ 25o in any direction against tower (refer to proper
mounting of side strut)
• Consider the “offset” of the antenna in order to position the side strut.

Improper Mounting of Side Strut

Effects of Improper Mounting of Side Strut

• The Antenna leaves away from the tower

• With improper offset, mounting of side strut become impossible to attain
• Twisting and tearing of tower membrane from high wind pressure
• Antenna installation/orientation is more difficult
• Disconnection and loose of connectors from high wind pressure

4.3. Antenna Stopper

• Antenna Stopper are normally delivered together with larger antenna and must be fitted to the pole.
• The Antenna Stopper provides a platform for the antenna when panning and will prevent the antenna
sliding down the pole – this event could damage the installed waveguide
• They can also be used to marginally adjust the vertical position of the antenna up or down the pole to
improve side strut installation.
• With most smaller-antenna (integrated), Antenna Stoppers are not needed as the azimuth / elevation
adjustment operates independently from the antenna mount bracket.

Warning! The Antenna Stopper should be installed at the bottom of antenna bracket

Figure. Wrong and Correct Antenna Stopper Installation (0.6m and 0.9m Antenna Size)

There is no Antenna Stopper in the antenna package for 0.3m, 0.6m and 0.9m antenna size, except by order in
project. See the table below:

Position 1 The first Position in order of priority is just before the cable enters the shelter through
the wall plate.
Position 2 Highest priority - the bottom of the vertical cable run, on the straight section just
above the bend where it transitions from vertical to horizontal.

Position 3 The third position in order of priority is at the antenna position. Here, the Grounding
Kit is fitted on the vertical straight section of cable just after the transition from
horizontal to vertical.
Note:
• For optical and DC power cables no grounding is required.
• For Coaxial cables, the shielded must be grounded as required, at least at the end of the vertical run and
the entry to the indoor cabinet, using the appropriated grounding kit.
• For Ethernet cables, the shielded Ethernet cable (SF/UTP construction) must be grounded to the antenna
tower at the top (next to the IP-20 unit), the entry to the indoor cabinet, and every 50m, using the kit
CAT5E_gnd_kit.
