JCM Graduate Theory Exam:

Sample Written Portion and Statement of Expectations

I. The first portion of the exam tests one's knowledge of scales and modes.
Be prepared to write any scale/mode in any key. Below are a few examples.

II. The second portion of the exam asks you to voice a series of given chords. Be prepared
to handle various chord extensions, as well as slash chords. Below are a few examples.

III. The third portion of the exam will provide you with a melody and chord
progression in concert pitch, and ask you to rewrite both for a transposing instrument.

IV. The fourth and final portion of the exam is in two parts.

a. In the first part, you will be asked to write a harmonic analysis of a standard, using
the analysis system of your choice. You will be given the opportunity to include written
explanation of your analysis as well. The lead sheet of the standard will be provided.

b. In the second part, you will be asked to do a harmonic and melodic analysis
of a tune consisting of two melodies (no changes, but the tune does include notated
chords, which will help with your analysis). Be prepared to discuss both the
implied harmonies from the interaction between the two voices, as well as an analysis
of the melodies themselves. You will be given the opportunity to include written
explanation of your analysis as well. The sheet music for the tune will be provided.
