THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE
The Man Booker Prize for Fiction is awarded annually for full-length novels of writers from the
Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland with a view to representing the very best in contemporary fiction.
The prestigious prize was originally called the Booker-McConnell Prize, the name of the sponsor company;
however, it was better-known as the 'Booker Prize. In 2002, the name was modified when Man Group
became the sponsor and they keep the word 'Booker?
Books from publishers can be submitted for consideration for the prize. In addition, the judges can
sometimes send inviations to authors if they think the books should be included. Initially, the Advisory
Committee give advice if there are any changes to the rules for the prize. Then, the people who will judge
the books will be selected. There is an annual change in the judging panel and usually an individual is only a
judge once.
The organizers also made great efforts to ensure that the judging panel is balanced in terms of gender and
professions. Normally, a writer, a critic, an editor and an academic are chosen along with a celebrity from
wider society. Nevertheless, when the panel of judges has been confirmed, they are left to make their own
decisions without any further involvement or intervention from the sponsor.
The Booker Prize is highly appreciated because it rewards the finest in fiction, features great books to

In the history of technology, computers and calculators were innovative developments. They are
essentially different from all other machines because they have a memory. This memory stores instructions
and information. In a calculator, the instructions are the various functions of arithmetic, which are
permanently remembered by the machine and cannot be altered or added to. The information consists of the
numbers which are keyed in.
An electronic pocket calculator can perform almost instant arithmetic. A calculator requires an input unit
to feed in numbers, a processing unit to make the calculation, a memory unit, and an output unit to display
the result. The calculator is powered by a small battery or by a panel of solar cells. Inside is a microchip that

contains the memory and processing units and also controls the input unit, which is the keyboard, and the
output unit, which is the display.
The input unit has keys for numbers and operations. Beneath the key is a printed circuit board containing a
set of contacts for each key. Pressing a key closes the contacts and sends a signal along a pair of lines in the
circuit board to the processing unit, in which the binary code for that key is stored in the memory. The
processing unit also sends the code to the display. Each key is connected by a different pair of lines to the
processing unit, which repeatedly checks the lines to find out when a pair is linked by a key.
The memory unit stores the arithmetic instructions for the processing unit and holds the temporary results
that occur during calculation. Storage cells in the memory unit hold the binary codes for the keys that have
been pressed. The number codes, together with the operation code for the plus key, are held in temporary
cells until the processing unit requires them.
When the equal key is pressed, it sends a signal to the processing unit. This takes the operation code - for
example, addition - and the two numbers being held in the memory unit and performs the operation on the
two numbers. After the addition is done, the result goes to the decoder in the calculator's microchip. This
code is then sent to the liquid crystal display unit, which shows the result, or output, of the calculation.

Jupiter can be observed in the night sky without a telescope for much of the year. If you don't often
gaze at the largest planet in our solar system when the Sun goes down, you should try to do so next week:
That's the best time to see Jupiter in 2019.
On Monday, June 10, the planet will reach its brightest state of the year when viewed from Earth. It
will appear above the horizon around twilight and remain clearly visible in the sky for the rest of the night.
The celestial treat is the result of something called opposition. This happens when the Earth falls directly
between the Sun and Jupiter, creating optimal conditions for the gas giant to shine brightly in the night sky.
Jupiter is also exceptionally close to us this time of year. On Wednesday, June 12, it will be just 398
million miles away—the shortest distance between Jupiter and Earth we'll see in all of 2019. These ideal
conditions will also make Jupiter's satellites more visible than they normally are. Though the planet itself
can be seen with the naked eye, a small telescope or binoculars could enable you to spot one of Jupiter's
four largest moons: Ganymede, Europa, Callisto, or Io.
And guess what? Jupiter's opposition isn't the only sky-gazing event to look forward to as the months
get warmer: On July 2, 2019, the first total solar eclipse in two years will occur.

Read the text below and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
A generation gap in the workplace can make workers both young and old feel inferior, as well as hamper
productivity and teamwork. Differences between generations can be seen in work ethics, habits and
communication styles. Younger workers might fear not being taken seriously by their older colleagues,
while older workers might fear that their experience is not valued but replaced by workers with knowledge
of more current technology. However, members of each generation can close the gap between them if they're
willing to meet one another halfway.
Older workers can show respect to the younger set by asking for their opinions and recognizing their
contributions to the workplace as valid, or complimenting them on a job well done. Younger workers can
show their elders respect by asking for advice on how to manage a situation with work, based on the older
worker's many years of experience. It's important for both entry- and senior-level workers to see each other
as equals, regardless of the type of position in which they work. No one wants to feel inferior or irrelevant
just because of their age. Rather, a generation gap at work can be a learning opportunity.
Workers can also put themselves in their colleagues' shoes to determine what might be bothering
them about their generational age difference. If a person is much older than another, perhaps it is bitterness
about fewer job opportunities, or fear that a younger worker might seem more relevant and edge him out of
his job. If workers open their minds to understand where co-workers are coming from, it can help ease any
tension between them and appreciate each other's work contributions.
If age seems to be a problem for someone at the workplace, it can be helpful to do the very opposite of
what a co-worker might expect from someone of a different age set due to stereotypes. For example, if a
worker is considerably younger such as right out of college, she can share researched information to indicate
that she knows what she's doing, or show curiosity instead of upset to indicate emotional maturity if the
person makes a disparaging remark about her youth. Older workers can maintain an enthusiastic attitude
about work instead of showing boredom or bitterness from past experiences.
Workers can, moreover, directly address the concern of age differences at work with the colleague at
odds with them by asking the person for constructive advice on how to handle the issue. For example, older
workers who are unfamiliar with new software that younger colleagues understand might acknowledge to
them that they did the same tasks differently in years past but show interest in learning the program to keep
up with modern technology. Learning to speak their technological language can make them feel more
connected. Likewise, a younger worker can admit to being green on the work scene, but eager to gain
experience by learning from senior colleagues.
Question 36. What is the purpose of the writer in the passage?
A. To describe the status of generation gap in the workplace.

Foot racing is a popular activity in the United States. It is seen not only as a competitive sport but also as
a way to exercise, to enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded people, and to donate money to a good cause.
Though serious runners may spend months training to compete, other runners and walkers might not train at
all. Those not competing to win might run in an effort to beat their own time or simply to enjoy the fun and
exercise. People of all ages, from those of less than one year (who may be pushed in strollers) to those in
their eighties, enter into this sport. The races are held on city streets, on college campuses, through parks,
and in suburban areas, and they are commonly 5 to 10 kilometers in length.
The largest foot race in the world is the 12-kilometer Bay to Breakers race that is held in San Francisco
every spring. This race begins on the east side of the city near San Francisco Bay and ends on the west side
at the Pacific Ocean. There may be 80,000 or more people running in this race through the streets and hills
of San Francisco. In the front are the serious runners who compete to win and who might finish in as little as
34 minutes. Behind them are the thousands 20 who take several hours to finish. In the back of the race are
those who dress in costumes and come just for fun. One year there was a group of men who dressed like
Elvis Presley, and another group consisted of firefighters who were tied together in a long line and who were
carrying a fire hose. There was even a bridal party, in which the bride was dressed in a long white gown and
the groom wore a tuxedo. The bride and groom threw flowers to bystanders, and they were actually married
at some point along the route.

In most families, conflict is more likely to be about clothing, music, and leisure time than about more
serious matters such as religion and core values. Family conflict is rarely about such major issues as
adolescents' drug use and delinquency. Nevertheless, it has been estimated that in about 5 million American
families (roughly 20 percent), parents and adolescents engage in intense, prolonged, unhealthy conflict. In its
most serious form, this highly stressful environment is associated with a number of negative outcomes,
including juvenile delinquency, moving away from home, increased school dropout rates, unplanned
pregnancy, membership in religious cults, and drug abuse (Steinberg & Morris, 2001).

Many of the changes that define adolescence can lead to conflict in parent- adolescent relationships.
Adolescents gain an increased capacity for logical reasoning, which leads them to demand reasons for things
they previously accepted without question, and the chance to argue the other side (Maccoby,1984). Their
growing critical-thinking skills make them less likely to conform to parents' wishes the way they did in
childhood. Their increasing cognitive sophistication and sense of idealism may compel them to point out
logical flaws and inconsistencies in parents' positions and actions. Adolescents no longer accept their parents
as unquestioned authorities. They recognize that other opinions also have merit and they are learning how to
form and state their own opinions. Adolescents also tend toward ego-centrism, and may, as a result, be ultra-
sensitive to a parent's casual remark. The dramatic changes of puberty and adolescence may make it difficult
for parents to rely on their children's preadolescent behavior to predict future behavior. For example,
adolescent children who were compliant in the past may become less willing to cooperate without what they
feel is a satisfactory explanation.

Body language is a vital form of communication. In fact, it is believed that the various forms of body
language contribute about 70 percent to our comprehension. It is important to note, however, that body
languages varies in different cultures. Take for example, eye movement. In the USA a child is expected to
look directly at a parent or teacher who is scolding him/her. In other cultures the opposite is true. Looking
directly at a teacher or parent in such a situation is considered a sign of disrespect.
Another form of body language that is used differently, depending on the culture, is distance. In
North America people don’t generally stand as close to each other as in South America. Two North
Americans who don’t know each other well will keep a distance of four feet between them, whereas South
Americans in the same situation will stand two to three feet apart. North Americans will stand closer than
two feet apart only if they are having a confidential conversation or if there is intimacy between them.
Gestures are often used to communicate. We point a finger, raise an eyebrow, wave an arm – or
move any other part of the body - to show what we want to say. However, this does not mean that people all
over the world use the same gestures to express the same meanings. Very often we find that the same
gestures can communicate different meanings, depending on the country. An example of a gesture that could
be misinterpreted is sticking out the tongue. In many cultures it is a sign of making a mistake, but in some
places it communicates ridicule.
The dangers of misunderstanding one another are great. Obviously, it is not enough to learn the
language of another culture. You must also learn its non-verbal signals if you want to communicate
successfully.
(Adapted from “Reading Academic English” by Judy Rapoport, Ronit Broder and Sarah Feingold)

answer to each of the questions from 39 to 45.
The green building movement, started in the 1970s as a way to reduce environmental destruction, is
changing the way buildings are constructed. In the early years, green builders were a small minority, and
their goals of reducing the environmental impact of buildings were considered unrealistic. Now, however,
the movement is growing, as builders have been able to take advantage of new technology.
Green builders try to make use of recycled materials, which means less waste in dumps. Also, they
reduce environmental impact by reducing the energy requirements of a building. One way is to provide an
alternative, non-polluting source of energy. First, with solar panels, it is possible to produce electricity from
the rays of the sun. Once installed, they provide energy at no cost and with no pollution.
Another solution is to reduce the amount of energy required in a building. It is possible to cut electricity use
noticeably by improving natural lighting and installing low-energy light bulbs. To reduce the amount of fuel
needed for heating or cooling, builders also add insulation to the walls so that the building stays warmer in
winter and cooler in summer.
One example of this advanced design is the Genzyme Center of Cambridge, the most environmentally
responsible office building in America. Every aspect of the design and building had to consider two things:
the need for a safe and pleasant workplace for employees and the need to lessen the negative environmental
impact. 75 percent of the building materials were recycled materials, and the energy use has been reduced by
43 percent and water use by 32 percent, compared with other buildings of the same size.
In other parts of the world, several large-scale projects have recently been developed according to green
building principles. One of these is in Vauban, Germany, in an area that was once the site of army housing.
The site has been completely rebuilt with houses requiring 30 percent less energy than conventional ones.
These houses, heated by special non-polluting systems, are also equipped with solar panels.
A larger project is under way in China. The first phase of this project will include houses for 400
families built with solar power, non-polluting bricks, and recycled wall insulation. In a second phase, entire
neighborhoods in six cities will be built. If all goes well, the Chinese government plans to copy these ideas
in new neighborhoods across China.
Green building ideas, on a small or large scale, are spreading. Individuals, companies, and
governments are beginning to see their benefits. Not only are they environmentally friendly, green buildings
improve living and working conditions and also save money in the long run.
(Adapted from “Advanced Reading Power” by Beatrice S. Mikulecky and Linda Jeffries)

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions.
Most parents want their sons and daughters to have equal chances of success when they grow up. Today,
equality of the sexes is largely mandated by public policy and law. However, old-fashioned ideas and a lot of
prejudice are still part of our culture and present challenging questions for parents.
Gender stereotypes are rigid ideas about how boys and girls should behave. We all know what these
stereotypes are: A "feminine" girls should be insecure, accommodating and a little illogical in her thinking.
A "masculine" boy should be strong, unemotional, aggressive, and competitive. How are children exposed to
these stereotypes? According to the researchers David and Myra Sacker of the American University of
Washington, D.C., boys and girls are often treated differently in the classroom. They found out that when
boys speak, teachers usually offer constructive comments, when girls speak, teachers tend to focus on the
behavior. It's more important how the girls act rather than what they say.
The emphasis on differences begins at birth and continues throughout childhood. For example, few
people would give pink baby's clothes to a boy or a blue blanket to a girl. Later, many of us give girls dolls
and miniature kitchenware, while boys receive action figures and construction sets. There's nothing wrong
with that. The problem arises when certain activities are deemed appropriate for one sex but not the other.
According to Heather J. Nicholson, Ph.D., director of the National Resource Center for Girls, Inc., this kind
of practice prevents boys and girls from acquiring important skills for their future lives.
"The fact is," says Nicholson, "that society functions as a kind of sorting machine regarding gender. In a
recent survey, fifty-eight percent of eighth-grade girls but only six percent of boys earned money caring for
younger children. On the other hand, twenty-seven percent of boys but only three percent of girls earned
money doing lawn work". If we are serious about educating a generation to be good workers and parents,
we need to eliminate such stereotypes as those mentioned previously.
Gender stereotypes inevitably are passed to our children. However, by becoming aware of the messages
our children receive, we can help them develop ways to overcome these incorrectideas. To counteract these
ideas, parents can look for ways to challenge and support their children, and to encourage confidence in
ways that go beyond what society's fixed ideas about differences of sexare.

For hundreds of years, giving flowers have been a social means of communication. In the United States,
flowers are often given during rites of passage, for commemorating special occasions or as a heartfelt gift
between loved ones and friends. Flower gifting also occurs in most countries around the world. However,
the meanings and traditions often vary.
While students traditionally gave their favorite teacher an apple in past years, in China, teachers are given
flowers. Peonies are by far the flower most often given in China. They are also quite popularly used for
weddings. Strangely, potted plants are not considered a pleasant gift among Asian cultures. The people
believe that like a plant confined by a pot, the gift symbolizes a binding or restriction.
In Russia, in lieu of giving birthday presents, the guest of honor receives a single flower or an unwrapped
bouquet. Floral arrangements or baskets are not given. Russians celebrate a holiday known as Woman’s
Day. Traditional gifts include red roses, hyacinths or tulips. When there is a funeral or other occasion where
someone wishes to express sympathy, carnations, lilies or roses are given in circular configurations, which
signify the transition of birth, life and death to rebirth. In this instance, the color of choice is commonly
yellow. For joyous occasions, arrangements and bouquets generally contain an odd number of flowers.
In the times of ancient Rome, brides carried flowers to scare away evil spirits and encourage fertility. The
Dutch believed that flowers were food for the soul. When invited to someone’s home in Great Britain, it is
tradition to bring a gift of flowers. All types are acceptable except white lilies, which are usually seen at
funerals. Not unlike the United States, red roses are a symbol of love. Flowers are generally gifted in odd
numbered increments regardless of the occasion. However, the Brits also have superstitions regarding the
number 13, so the number is avoided.
In the southern region of the continent, flowers are traditionally given during Christmas. Egyptians are much
more conservative and restrict flower gifting to funerals and weddings. While certain flowers may have
significant meanings for some, flowers in Las Vegas and across the United States flowers are an accepted
gift for any reason desired.

The Singapore Science Centre is located on a six-hectare site in Jurong. At the centre, we can discover
the wonders of science and technology in a fun way. Clap your hands and colorful bulbs will light up. Start a
wheel spinning and it will set off a fan churning. It is a place to answer our curiosity and capture our
imagination.
The centre features over four hundred exhibits covering topics like solar radiation, communication,
electronics, mathematics, nuclear energy and evolution. It aims to arouse interest in science and technology
among us and the general public. The centre is the first science one to be established in South East Asia. It
was opened in 1977 and it now receives an average of one thousand, two hundred visitors a day. The
exhibits can be found in four exhibition galleries. They are the Lobby, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and
Aviation. These exhibits are renewed annually so as to encourage visitors to make return visits to the centre.
Instead of the usual “Hands off” notices found in exhibition halls, visitors are invited to touch and feel
the exhibits, push the buttons, turn the cranks or pedals. This is an interesting way to learn science even if
you hate the subject. A Discovery Centre was built for children between the ages of three and twelve. This
new exhibition gallery was completed in 1985. Lately this year a stone-age exhibit was built. It shows us
about the animals and people which were extinct.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
People have been donating blood since the early twentieth century to help accident victims and
patients undergoing surgical procedures. Usually a pint of whole blood is donated, and it is then divided into
platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells. People can donate blood (for red blood cells) about once
every two months.
Transfusing the blood from the donor to the recipient is straightforward. It involves taking the blood
from a donor’s arm vein by means of a hypodermic syringe. The blood flows through a plastic tube to a
collection bag or bottle that contains sodium citrate, which prevents the blood from clotting.
When the blood is given to a patient, a plastic tube and hypodermic needle are connected to the
recipient’s arm. The blood flows down from the container by gravity. This is a slow process and may last as
long as 2 hours to complete the infusion of blood into the recipient. The patient is protected from being
infected during the transfusion. Only sterile containers, tubing, and needles are used, and this helps ensure
that transfused or stored blood is not exposed to disease causing bacteria.
Negative reactions to transfusions are not unusual. The recipient may suffer an allergic reaction or be
sensitive to donor leukocytes. Some may suffer from an undetected red-cell incompatibility. Unexplained
reactions are also fairly common. Although they are rare, other causes of such negative reactions include
contaminated blood, air bubbles in the blood, overloading of the circulatory system through administration
of excess blood, or sensitivity to donor plasma or platelets.
Today, hospitals and blood banks go to great lengths to screen all blood donors and their blood. All
donated blood is routinely and rigorously tested for diseases, such as HIV (which causes AIDS), hepatitis B,
and syphilis. When the recipient is a newborn or an infant, the blood is usually irradiated to eliminate
harmful elements. Donated blood is washed, and the white blood cells and platelets are removed.
Storing the blood sometimes requires a freezing process. To freeze the red blood cells, a glycerol
solution is added. To unfreeze, the glycerol is removed. The ability to store blood for long periods has been a
boon to human health.

Fiberscopes are one of the most important Outcomes of the science of fiber optics. Fibers made of glass
and transparent acrylic plastic are capable of conveying light energy, and when thousands of these fibers are
combined in what is called a fiberscope, they can transmit images. The most common fiberscopes contain
about 750,000 fibers, each 0.001 centimeter, or 10 microns, in diameter. For certain uses, the diameter of the
fiber may be as small as 5 microns.
Fiberscopes have a wide range of applications. In the medical field, physicians use fiberscopes to examine
internal organs and as an aid in delicate surgeries. Miniature probes have also been developed to view muscle
fiber, skin tissue, and blood cells. Fiberscopes have also found varied uses in industry, particularly to inspect or
control operations in inaccessible areas. Bundles of fiberscopes fused together in a solid plate, called a faceplate,
are being used in the manufacture of television picture tubes and other cathode-ray tube devices.
The most far-reaching applications of fiber-optic technology are in communications. Optical fibers carry
voice messages for telephone service. The sound of the voice is electronically broken down into thousands
of pulses per second, which causes a transmitting laser to send coordinated pulses of light through the optical
fibers. At the receiving end, the light pulses are converted to electrical signals and the voice message is
reconstructed. Light-wave communication systems can handle an immensely greater number of telephone
calls and television programs than the current system, and they will form the basis of the "electronic
superhighway" expected to crisscross the nation in the near future of the information age.

A POWERFUL INFLUENCE
There can be no doubt at all that the Internet has made a huge difference to our lives. Parents are worried
that children spend too much time playing on the Internet, hardly (31) _____ doing anything else in their spare
time. Naturally, parents are curious to find out why the Internet is so attractive, and they want to know if it can
be harmful for their children. Should parents worry if their children are spending that much time staring at their
computers?
Obviously, if children are bent over their computers for hours, (32) ____ in some game, instead of doing
their homework, then soothing is wrong. Parents and children could decide how much use the child should make
of the Internet, and the child should give his or her (33) ____ that it won't interfere with homework. (34) _____
the child is not holding to this arrangement the parents can take more drastic steps. Dealing with a child's use of
the Internet is not much different from negotiating any other sort of bargain about behavior.
Any parent (35) _____ is seriously alarmed about a child's behavior should make an appointment
to discuss the matter with a teacher. Spending time in front of the screen does not necessarily affect a child's
performance at school. Even if a child is absolutely crazy about using the Internet, he or she is probably just
going through a phase, and in a few months there will be something else to worry about!

answer to each of the following questions.

Improving girls’ educational levels has been demonstrated to have clear impacts on the health and
economic future of young women, which in turn improves the prospects of their entire community. The infant
mortality rate of babies whose mothers have received primary education is half that of children whose mothers
are illiterate. In the poorest countries of the world, 50% of girls do not attend secondary school. Yet, research
shows that every extra year of school for girls increases their lifetime income by 15%. Improving female
education, and thus the earning potential of women, improves the standard of living for their own children, as
women invest more of their income in their families than men do. Yet, many barriers to education for girls

remain. In some African countries, such as Burkina Faso, girls are unlikely to attend school for such basic
reasons as a lack of private latrine facilities for girls.
Higher attendance rates of high schools and university education among women, particularly in
developing countries, have helped them make inroads into professional careers with better-paying salaries and
wages. Education increases a woman's (and her partner and the family's) level of health and health awareness.
Furthering women's levels of education and advanced training also tends to lead to later ages of initiation of
sexual activity and first intercourse, later age at first marriage, and later age at first childbirth, as well as an
increased likelihood to remain single, have no children, or have no formal marriage and alternatively, have
increasing levels of long-term partnerships. It can lead to higher rates of barrier and chemical contraceptive use
(and a lower level of sexually transmitted infections among women and their partners and children), and can
increase the level of resources available to women who divorce or are in a situation of domestic violence. It has
been shown, in addition, to increase women's communication with their partners and their employers, and to
improve rates of civic participation such as voting or the holding of office.

More than 200 reindeer have died of starvation on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, with
scientists blaming their deaths on climate change. The wild deer carcasses were found on the Arctic islands this
summer by researchers from the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), which said it had never “logged” so many
deaths at once in 40 years of monitoring the animals’ population level. “It’s scary to find so many dead
Page 4 of 6
animals,” project leader Ashild Onvik Pedersen told state broadcaster NRK. “This is an example of how climate
change affects nature. It is just sad.”
Svalbard’s capital Longyearbyen, the northernmost town on earth, is thought to be warming quicker than
any other settlement on the planet, climate scientists warned earlier this year. The milder temperatures in the
region led to unusually heavy rainfall in December, leaving a thick layer of ice when the precipitation froze.
This meant the reindeer could not dig through the hardened tundra to reach the vegetation they graze on in their
usual pastures, the NPI said. Svalbard’s reindeer have been observed eating seaweed and kelp when food is
“scarce”, but “these” are less nutritious and cause them stomach problems.
A relatively high number of calves born last year increased the death toll, as the youngest and weakest are
often the first to die in harsh conditions. “Some of the mortality is natural because there were so many calves last
year. But the large number we see now is due to heavy rain, which is due to global warming,” said Ms
Onvik Pedersen.
A team of three scientists spent 10 weeks investigating population of the Svalbard reindeer earlier this
year. Researchers warned the decline of reindeer would cause unwanted plant species, currently kept in check
by the animals’ grazing, to spread across Arctic ecosystems in Europe, Asia and North America.
Arctic reindeer and caribou populations have declined 56 per cent in the last two decades, a report by the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said last year. The report said food security was partly to
blame for falling herd numbers, while warmer summers could also put the animals at greater risk of diseases
spread by flies and parasites. The average temperature in Longyearbyen has risen by 3.7 0C since 1900, more
than three times the global average increase of about 10C. In 2016, the entrance to the town’s “Doomsday” seed
vault – which stores specimens of almost all the world’s seeds – was flooded following heavy rainfall.

D. The reindeer here couldn’t stand the low temperature when the precipitation froze.
Question 46: The word “scarce” in paragraph 2 could be best replaced by _____.

Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places, it is actually considered unusual not to
use one. In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are
more than a means of communication - having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected.
The explosion in mobile phone use around the world has made some health professionals worried. Some
doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile
phones. In England, there has been a serious debate about this issue. Mobile phone companies are worried
about the negative publicity of such ideas. They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for
your health.
On the other hand, medical studies have shown changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile
phones. Signs of change in the tissues of the brain and head can be detected with modem scanning
equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at young age because of serious memory loss. He
couldn't remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk
on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years. His
family doctor blamed his mobile phone use, but his employer's doctor didn't agree.
What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation. High-tech machines
can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is
some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about.
As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it’s best to use mobile phones less often.
Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time. Use your mobile phone only when you really
need it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile
phones may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health. So for now, it's wise not to use your
mobile phone too often.

In addition to providing energy, fats have several other functions in the body. The fat soluble
vitamins, A, D, E and K, are dissolved in fats, as their name implies. Good sources of these vitamins have
high oil or fat content, and the vitamins are stored in the body’s fatty tissues. In the diet, fats cause food to
remain longer in the stomach, this increasing the feeling of fullness for some time after a meal is eaten. Fats
add variety, taste, and texture to foods, which accounts for the popularity of fried foods. Fatty deposits in the
body have an insulating and protective value. The curves of the human female body are due mostly to
strategically located fat deposits.
Whether a certain amount of fat in the diet is essential to human health is not definitely known. When
rats are fed a fat-free diet, their growth eventually ceases, their skin becomes inflamed and scaly, and their
reproductive systems are damaged. Two fatty acids, linoleic and arachidonic acids, prevent these
abnormalities and hence are called essential fatty acids. They also are required by a number of other
animals but their roles in human beings are debatable. Most nutritionists consider linoleic fatty acid an
essential nutrient for humans.

Coincident with (26) _________ about the accelerating loss of species and habitats has been a growing
appreciation of the importance of biological diversity, the (27)_________ of species in a particular ecosystem,
to the health of the Earth and human well-being. Much has been written about the diversity of terrestrial
organisms, particularly the exceptionally rich life associated tropical rainforest habitats. Relatively little has
been said, (28) _________ , about diversity of life in the sea even though coral reef systems are
comparable to rain forests in terms of richness of life.
An alien exploring Earth would probably (29) _________ priority to the planet's dominants - most

of truly examining global issues. Seen from far away, it is easy to realize that landmasses occupy only one-third
of the Earth's surface. Given that two thirds of the Earth's surface is water and that marine life lives at all levels
of the ocean, the total three-dimensional living space of the ocean is perhaps 100 times than that of land and
contains more than 90 percent of all life on Earth even though the ocean has fewer distinct species.

History books recorded that the first film with sound was The Jazz Singer in 1927. But sound films, or
talkies, did not suddenly appear after years of silent screenings. From the earliest public performances in 1896,
films were accompanied by music and sound effects. These were produced by a single pianist, a small band, or a
full-scale orchestra; large movie theatres could buy sound-effect machines. Research into sound that was
reproduced at exactly at the same time as the pictures - called "synchronized sound" – began soon after the very
first films were shown. With synchronized sound, characters on the movie screen could sing and speak. As early
as 1896, the newly invented gramophone, which played a large disc carrying music and dialogue, was used as a
sound system. The biggest disadvantage was that the sound and pictures could become unsynchronized if, for
example, the gramophone needle jumped or if the speed of the projector changed. This system was only
effective for a single song or dialogue sequence.
In the "sound-on-film" system, sound was recorded as a series of marks on celluloid which could be read by an
optical sensor. These signals would be placed on the film alongside the image, guaranteeing synchronization. Short feature films
were produced in this way as early as 1922. This system eventually brought us "talking
pictures".

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
There are three basic types of classroom learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. These learning
styles describe the most common ways that people learn. Individuals tend to instinctively prefer one style over
the others; thus each person has a learning style that is dominant even though he or she may also rely somewhat
on the other approaches at different times and in different circumstances.
Visual learners prefer to sit somewhere in the classroom where no obstructions hinder their view of the
lesson. They rely on the teacher's facial expressions and body language to aid their learning. They learn best
from a blend of visual displays and presentations such as colorful videos, diagrams, and flip-charts. Often, these
learners think in pictures and may even close their eyes to visualize or remember something. When they are
bored, they look around for something to watch. Many visual learners lack confidence in their auditory memory
skills and so may take detailed notes during classroom discussions and lectures. Auditory learners sit where they
can hear well. They enjoy list ening and talking, so discussions and verbal lectures stimulate them. Listening to
what others have to say and then talking the subject through helps them process new
Page 3 of 5
information. These learners may be heard reading to themselves out loud because they can absorb written
information better in this way. Sounding out spelling words, reciting mathematical theories, or talking their way
across a map are examples of the types of activit ies that improve their understanding.
Kinesthetic learners may find it difficult to sit still in a conventional classroom. They need to be physically
active and take frequent breaks. When they are bored, they fidget in their seats. They prefer to sit someplace
where there is room to move about. They benefit from manipulating materia ls and learn best when classroom
subjects such as math, science, and reading are processed through hands-on experiences. Incorporating arts-and-
crafts activities, building projects, and sports into lessons helps kinesthetic learners process new information.
Physical expressions of encouragement, such as a pat on the back, are often appreciated.

In addition to these traditional ways of describing learning styles, educators have identified other ways
some students prefer to learn. Verbal learners, for example, enjoy using words, both written and spoken. Logical
learners are strong in the areas of logic and reasoning, Social learners do best when working in groups, whereas
solitary learners prefer to work alone. Research shows that each of these learning styles, as well as the visual,
auditory, and kinesthetic styles, uses different parts of the brain. Students may prefer to focus on just one style,
but practicing other styles involves more of the brain's potential and therefore helps students remember more of
what they learn.
