The Standard Language

The standard language is a variety of language which is used by the governments based on
some specific characteristics. Its association with administrative purposes, commercial
purposes, educational purposes and so on. If we talk about English as a standard language, we
know that the language which is used in newspapers, books, mass media and also taught in
many schools. The Standard language more emphasized vocabulary, spelling, and grammar
rather than spoken.
Accent and Dialect
An accent is an act of pronunciation. It is believed that every language user speaks with an
accent. According to this book "the term accent is restricted to the description of aspects of
pronunciation that identify where an individual speaker is from, regionally or socially".
Contrastingly, dialect is used to define the functions of grammar and vocabulary along with
the aspects of pronunciation.
Variation in Grammar
Stint differences in vocabulary are easily recognized and dialect variation in the meaning of
grammatical constructions are less found. Trudgill P. (1983) gave an example of three
English speakers, through their conversation Trudgill found variation in grammar.
