    Ehrlich’s Magic Bullets

    The magic bullet was a scientific concept developed by a German Nobel laureate Paul
    Ehrlich in 1900.
    Ehrlich formed an idea that it could be possible to kill specific microbes (such as
    bacteria) that cause diseases without harming the body itself. He named the
    hypothetical agent as magic bullet
    HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES
    • The discovery of the first antibiotic was an
    accident.
    – Alexander Fleming accidentally contaminated a
    plate with a fungus.
    – He observed a clearly defined region of no
    bacterial growth where the fungi had contaminated
    the plate.
    – The area around the fungus was eventually referred
    to as a zone of inhibition.
