INTRODUCTION:
The term merchant bank refers to a financial institution that conducts underwriting, loan
services, financial advising, and fundraising services for large corporations and high-
net-worth individuals. A merchant bank is historically a bank dealing in commercial loans
and investment. In modern British usage it is the same as an investment bank. Merchant
banks were the first modern banks and evolved from medieval merchants who traded in
commodities, particularly cloth merchants. Historically, merchant banks purpose was to
facilitate and or finance production and trade of commodities, hence the name
"merchant". Few banks today restrict their activities to such a narrow scope. Some of the
world famous merchant banks are Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse & Morgan Stanley etc.
In India there are many banks which are into the field of merchant banking some of the
banks are ICICI, State Bank Of India, Punjab National Bank etc.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
1) What is the history of Merchant banking in India?
2) What are the various categories of Merchant bank of India?
3) What are the regulation for the Merchant banking in India?

RESEARCH PROBLEM:
This research is trying to analyze the history of Merchant bank in India. To find various
categories of Merchant banking in India and also to analyze the rules and regulations of the
Merchant banking in India.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES:
1)To understand the concept of Merchant banking
2) To study the categories and function of Merchant banking in India
3) To study the difference between Merchant bank and commercial bank

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
The research project has been carried out in compliance with various status, books as primary
sources and various journal, articles as secondary sources.
CONCLUSION:
The conclusion part of the project will based on the hypothesis and the findings of the project
and most of it will be on secondary source of assertion studies.
