Name: Nelly Borda Riveros.

In this set of materials, both reading and listening, discuss the benefits and no benefits
of the employees who work four days a week compared with five days a week. The
article manifests that the shortened workweek has a lot of advantages, both for
company and personal life of the worker. Nevertheless, according to the professor these
gains are injurious from many points of view.
First of all, the passage focusses on the profits for the company if the staff labors four
days a week. One of them is the efficiency of the workers with the same amount of work
and the cost won’t be affected. The writer explains that the employees will be more rest
and alert, then they won’t make mistakes. Therefore, the economy of the enterprise
won’t be altered, since these workers earns only the 80% of the normal rate. The
lecturer refutes this statement by claiming that hiring more staff could be spend a lot of
money for the company, because it implies capacitation and training to new workers,
also more space and work materials for these employees.
A second benefits that the article mentions is related to unemployment rate. The author
explains that if the staff works few hours other employees may replace them, then the
unemployment rate reduce. Nevertheless, the professor refutes that with the argument
that more jobs should be created and if all people have job, then will be no occupations.
The third gain that the writer establishes is related to improve of quality personal life of
the worker. If the employees work few hours, they can be able to spend more time with
their families or others activities. In spite of the fact that the passage mentions, the
spokesperson claims that statement is not always that way, because many companies
prefer to five days workers, since it implies less cost, so the employee of four days a
week could lose his job, then his quality personal life as a worker is in danger.
