PREPARING YOUR FILES FOR FINAL PORTFOLIO LAYOUT GDes 1312

Before starting your final portfolio layout in Adobe Illustrator, take time to organize your files as follows.
Doing this will make your layout process go more smoothly and efficiently.

Dependent on file, you will need either PDF or PNG files to place into the template.

Folders
Create one folder and title it “Final Portfolio”. Inside, create 3 more empty folders and title them:
 Problem Description PDF
 Visual work PNG
 Scanned/photo Documents

Problem descriptions
 Format all your problem descriptions for how you want them to look in your final portfolio (limit
each to one page only and unify their appearance!)
 Save each problem description individually as a PDF to your previously created ‘Problem
Description PDF’ folder. (Word: File > Save As..)

All visual work created in Adobe Illustrator

 All files that were saved as PNG files for submitting to Canvas: compile these individual files
into previously created ‘Visual work PNG’ folder.
 You may need to export these files again if you have made changes to your design work or lost
track of your previously exported files.
(Illustrator: File > Export > Export as…)

If you have a scanner, use it! Scanners work the best for Scanning apps use your phone’s camera to
“scan” any document and among other things, remove glare, shadows, and other unwanted elements from
the picture (i.e. they make the white of the paper appear as white as possible). Another feature available
on some scanning apps is to the capability to save these PDFs locally (in a folder on computer) so they
can be placed in the final portfolio.

 The mobile app recommended for this process is Adobe Scan, but there are many that work well
such as Microsoft’s Office Lens.
 You will need to get the scanned/photo scanned files from your phone to your computer. There
are many ways to do this using cloud storage. (I email them to myself, though I’m sure this is a
dated way to do things. But it works!)
o Save/move them to your previously created folder, ‘Scanned Documents PDF’
