maintenance & service manual CLARK f~ ‘SH He 183LD (Rev. 10.78) FOREWORD > This manval has been prepared to provide the customer and the main= tenance personnel with information and instructions on the mainten- ance and repair of the CLARK Power Shift Transmission. Extreme care has been exercised in the design, selection of materials and manufacturing of these units. The slight outlay in personal atten- tion and cost required to provide regular and proper lubrication, in spection at stated intervals, and such adjustments as may be indicated will be reimbursed many times in fow cost operation and trouble free service. In order to become familiar with the various parts of the trans sion, its principle of operation, trouble shooting and adjustments, it is urged that the mechanic study the instructions in this manual carefully and use it as a reference when performing maintenance and repair operations, Whenever repair or replacement of component parts is required, only Clark-epproved parts as listed in the applicable parts manual should be used. Use of “willfir” or non-approved parts may endanger proper ‘operation and performance of the equipment. The Clark Equipment Company does not werrant repair or replacement parts, nor failures resulting from the use thereof, which are not supplied by or approved by the Clark Equipment Company. IMPORTANT: Always furnish the Distributor with the transmission serial and model number when order- ing parts. ‘TABLE OF CONTENTS HOW THE UNIS OPERATE, 6, 7 ee ee SECTIONAL VIEWS AND PARTS IDENTIFICATION Basic Design = 5 ee ee ee FQ A Converter Group Be Fig B Convertor and Transmission Case Group... + + + Fin Three Speed Gear and Clutch Group. : Fig. D Cluteh Group ee Fie E Contral Valve Assembly 5. ee eee Fig F Parking Brake Group. : oe FS External Plumbing Diagram... ee yee Fie A Assembly Instructions oe ‘Typical 3 Speed 18000 Leng Drop Cross Section, .« DISASSEMBLY OF TRANSMISSION. foe - od CLUTCH DISASSEMBLY... : . : : “ CLEANING AND INSPECTION ©. oe 88 REASSEMBLY OF TRANSMISSION Foe SERVICING MACHINE AFTER TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL oo TOWING OR PUSH STARTING . . : . a SPECIFICATIONS AND SERVICE DATA : : . 1 LUBRICATION So 8 TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE . : . 48 THREE SPEED LONG DROP POWER OW 2. 2. eee AS PRESSURE CHECK POINTS . rr) CLUTCH AND GEAR ARRANGEMENT : : to TRANSMISSION TO ENGINE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE : 4“ NOTE: Metric Dimensions Shown in Brackets {J Service Publications « 1300 Falahee Road « Jackson, Michigan 4920. PHONE 1~517--764-6408 CLARK CLARK HOW THE UNITS OPERATE The transmission and hydraulic torque portion of the power train enacts an important role in transmitting engine power to the driving wheels, Im order to properly maintain and service these units it is important to first understand their function and how they opera The transmission and torque converter function together and operate through » common hydraulic system. It Is necessary to consider both units in the study of their function and operation. To tupplement she text below, and for reference use therewith, the following illustrations are. provided: Basie Design Fig. A Converter Group Fig. B Converter and Transmission Case Group. The function of the control valve assembly is to direct cil under pressure to the desired directional and speed clutch. A pro- vision is made on corn ion when the brokes are applied. This is accom= plished through use of » brake actuated shutoff valve. The speed and direction clutch assemblies are mounted inside the transmission ease and are connected to the output shaft of the converter by direct gearing. The to provide CLARK CLARK With the engine sunning, the converter charging pump draws oil from the transmission ump through the removable cil suction screen and directs it through the pressure regulating velve and oil filter. ‘The presture regulating valve mainiains pressure to the transmission contro} cover for actuating the dir tion and speed clutches, This requires a small portion of the foral volume of oll used in the system. The remaining volume of oil is directed through the torque converter circuit to the oll cooler and returns to the transmission for positive lubrication. This regulator valve consists of « hardened valve spool operating Jn a closely fitted bore, The valve spoot is spring loaded to held the valve in 2 closed position. When a specific pressure is achieved, the valve spool works against the spring umil a port is exposed along the side of the bore. This sequence of events provides the proper system pressure, After entering the converter housing the oil is dicected through the stoter support to the converter blade ‘ond exits in the passage between the turbine shaft and converter support. The ail then flows out of the converter to the oll cooler. After leaving the cooler, the oil is directed to a lubricating fitting on the transmission and through & series of tubes and passeges lubricates the transmission besrings and cluiches. The oil then gravity drains to the transmission sump. The hydraulic torque converter consists basically of three elements and their celated parts to multiply engine torque, The engine power is transmitted from the engine flywheel to the impeller element through the impelier cover. This element is the pump portion of the hyclraulic torque converter and is the primary com ponent which starts the oil flowing to the other components which results in torque multiplication. This el- ‘ement can be compared to # centrifugst pump in that it picks up fluid at its conter and discharges at its oute diameter. ‘The torque converter turbine is mounted opposite the impeller and is connected to the ovtput shaft of the torque converter. This element receives fluid at ite oter diameter and discharges at its center. Fluid directed by the impelter out into the particular desiga of islading in the turbine and reaction member it the means bby which the hydraulic torque converter multiplies torque. ‘The reaction member of the torque converter is located between and at the center or inner diameters of the impeller and turbine elements. lis function is to take the fluid which is exhausting from the inner portion of the turbine and change its dicection to allow correct entry for recirevlation into the impeller element. ‘The torque converter will multiply engine torque to its designed maximum multiplication ratio when the out put shaft is at zero RPM. Therefore, wo can say that ab the output shaft is decreasing in speed the torque multiplication Is increasing. ‘The shift control vaive assembly consists of a valve body with selector valve spools. AA detent ball and spring In the selector spool provides one position for each speed range. A detent ball and spring in the direction spool provides three positions, one each for forward, neutral and reverse. With the engine running and the directional control lever in neutral position, oil pressure from the regulat- ing velva is blocked et the control velve, and the teansmission is ip neutral. Movement of the forward and reverse spool will direct oil, under pressure to cither the forward or reverse direction clutch a3 desired. ‘When eithor directional clutch is selected the opposite clutch is relieved of pressure ond vents back through the direction selector spool. The same procedure is used in the speed selector. ‘The direction or speed clutch assembly consists of a drum with internal splines and bore to receive @ hy- draulically actuated piston. The piston is “oil tight” by the use of sealing rings. A steel dise with external splines is inserted into the drum and rests against the piston. Next, a friction disc with splines at the inner diameter is inserted. Discs are alternated unfil the required total is achieved. A heavy back-up plate is then inserted and secured with @ snap ring. A Hubwith OD. splines is inserted into the splines of discs with teeth on the inner dismeter. ‘The disce and hub are free to increase in speed or rotate in the opposite direc. tion 28 long as no pressure is present in that specific clutch. CLARK CLARK To engege the clutch, a5 previously stated, the controt valve is placed in the desired position. This allows cil under pressure to flow from the control valve, through a passageway, to chosen clutch shaft. This shaft has 2 drilled passageway for oll under pressure to enter the sheft. Oil pressure sealing rings are located on the clutch shaft. These rings direct ofl under pressure to a desired clutch, Pressure of the ell forces the piston and discs against the heavy back-up plate, The discs, with teeth on the outer diameter, clamping against dises with teeth on the inner diameter, enables the hub and clutch shaft to be locked together and allows them to drive as a unit, ‘There are bleed balls or bleed orifices, depending upon the model, in the lurch piston which allow quick ‘escape for oil wher the pressure to the piston is released, BASIC DESIGN Figure A CLARK CLARK Figure 8 CLARK mem 10 12 ry 4 15 16 v7 18 v 20 2 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 a1 32 33 34 35. 36. 37 38 39, 40 a a2 4a 44 HR18000 CONVERTER GROUP DESCRIFTION Pump to Housing Gasket 7 “O" Ring Charging Pump Assembly Pump Mounting Serow Lockwasher Pump Mounting Serew Pump Mounting Serew Pump Mounting Stud Lockwesher Pump Mounting Stud Nut Filter Assembly —..- Bearing Support Screw and Lockwosher Bearing Locating Ring... - Pump Drive Bearing Support Bearing Retaining Ring Pump Drive Gear Searing Bearing Locating Ring Pump Drive Geer...
