The diagram illustrates the data on the percentage of 11-to-14-year-olds boys and girls who
involved in extreme sport in the UK in 2003.
Overall, both boys and girls preferred to taking part in Skateboarding and Rollerblading.
Another visible trend is that, the percentage of boys exceeds the female counterparts in most
activities, with a notable exception of Roller blading.

The percentage of boys participating mountain biking was significantly more than the figure for
girls. The particular data were 22.7 percent and 13.3 percent, respectively. Snowboarding did
not attract teenagers like the other sports. Boy’s involvement in this activity was more than
double the girl’s one, at 8.1 percent and 4 percent, respectively.
Mountain climbing saw similar figures for boys and girls, which are 10.6 for boys and 9.3 for
girls. The proportion of boys involving in skate boarding is greatly more than girls by 13.7
percent. The particular figures were 27.5 for boys and 13.8 for the female counterparts. By
contrast, only 21.7 percent of boys participated in Rollerblading, compared to 31.7 percent of
girls.

Nowadays, spending excessive time on sedentary activities among youngsters has been
receiving a great deal of public attention. Although this problem can be attributed to the host of
reasons, some approaches can be adopted to tackle this.
Some reasons can be citied to explain for the emergence of the problems. First, since TV
programs are broadcasted continuously day in day out, they trigger the curiosity of children and
teenagers to binge-watch all day. In fact, intriguing motions and vivid images make adolescents
glue their eyes on TV, which make them lose track of time and forget about other priorities like
reading book or do exercises. Secondly, schools do not encourage them to involve in extra-
curricular activities, such as team-building plays. This means that, young people are not well-
educated about the significance of physical activities that can actually do wonders for their
health, which leads to sedentary their lifestyles.
Nevertheless, the problem can be addressed, provided that some of following remedies are
taken into account. First, in order to break the binge-watch habit in youngsters, parents should
set a daily limit for watching TV or surfing the Internet and raise their awareness about the
importance of physical or outdoor activities. For example, parents can fix certain operating time
for entertaining by watching TV and simultaneously engage in outdoor and creative activities
with their children, which can also improve the relationship among them.
In conclusion, the problem is attributed to some reason, there are not without plausible
measures to address this. By educating the children and teenagers that outdoor activities are
beneficial for their health, they will become more and more aware of the importance of green
lifestyles.
