Problem of study How to promote digital transformation in
Colombian enterprises?
Global situation
For 2016 it was estimated that more than 3,000 million
people connected to the internet. By then, the digital
economy would represent more than 5% of GDP in the
average G20 economies, a percentage that will be 12%
in the most advanced. If the digital economy were from
a country, this situation by size in the fifth position of
the world, only behind the United States, China, Japan
and India. The digital economy has already become the
engine of the most advanced economies, as it represents
according to some sources around 20% of GDP growth
and has a greater economic weight than sectors such as
agriculture or energy. In Spain, it is estimated that the
impact of the Internet exceeded 23.4 billion euros in
2011 (2.4% of GDP), 9.200 of which correspond to
electronic commerce, which exceeded 12 billion euros
at the end of 2013. Understand the process of digital
transformation assuming that this transformation affects
all sectors; that the digital divide between developed
and developing countries has been reversed while the
user in these latter countries is becoming an
increasingly relevant and influential actor. Although
most organizations are already adjusted and
reorganizing for requests for this new digital economy,
not all are in the same phase of digital development.
National situation In Colombia, a large number of companies have already
materialized great advances in digitalization, both as
initiatives of the private sector, by the hand of public
initiatives, or by legal regulations and mandatory
regulatory processes, achieving a significant increase in
digital transformation at the country level. It is clear
that 2018 was marked by the future mandatory
electronic invoicing that led to the pace of digital
transformation in Colombia.

According to the recent survey of Digital

Transformation of the National Association of
Entrepreneurs (ANDI), entrepreneurs said that the
priorities when investing in technologies are mainly the
automation of processes by 82.8 percent and cost
reduction by 57.8 percent. Therefore, this 2018 has led
technology companies to reinvent themselves, not only
in their solutions that should be much more specialized,
but in the creation of commercial offers that allow
entrepreneurs to have options to move forward.

We cannot ignore that, in the same survey, it is clear

that the lack of budget is one of the main barriers and
challenges faced by Colombian entrepreneurs dedicated
to the fourth industrial revolution that drives them to
seek business leadership based on the transformation of
Business models. In 2019, Colombian companies will
be able to take certain steps in their transformation by
the hand of technology that contributes to the
functionality of the business and that has subscription
models that fit their economy.
Industrial engineering Industrial engineers have a fundamental role in this
situation transformation or revolution. First, because they are
professionals permanently linked to innovation and
change management. But above all for being
professionals prepared to manage projects that integrate
different technologies and able to specialize in each of
them: Artificial Intelligence, Additive Manufacturing,
Big Data, Cloud Computing, Blockchain, Internet of
Things, Virtual Reality, etc.
But of course the digital transformation not only affects
engineers and industries, PYMES and professionals,
but affects the whole society as a whole. We must be
aware of the social challenges that we will have to face
and the need of all kinds of professionals, from
anthropologists to marketing specialists, in this
revolution in which we are immersed.
The objective of this Digital Transformation Office is
to carry out Dissemination and Digitalization Plans that
help PYMES to incorporate TICS in their processes:
business management, relationship with third parties,
electronic commerce and digitalization of services or
solutions.
