Priyank Chauhan
I believe poetry needs to recover its charm,
it has become invisible in public space,
because it has lost its spiritual function – to
reveal.
If we are trees
and want there to be
more trees
then
there is no need
to hold hands
in coming together
for love.
The air
that gives us breath
will come
breathing slowly
around our necks and
with a gentle kiss
take our pollen grains
from our hands
to spread them
everywhere
in all directions
for free.
Trees
are good people and
the air
and the earth
are their good friends.
Notes:
Trees use mycorrhizal fungi for underground communication and also to distribute
resources amongst one another. Fertilization in plants is sometimes abiotic, carried out by
wind.
Poem 2
Notes:
This poem references the process of sexual reproduction by conjugation in which two
ciliates of a compatible mating type come together, to break up once again after the
genetic exchange is over.
Alfred North Whitehead and Bertrand Russell famously gave a 306 page proof for the
proposition that 1+1 = 2, in their book Principia Mathematica.
Poem 3
Notes:
This poem is about suffering from depression. Dysthymia, the chronic form of depression,
causes people to lack productivity, feel hopeless, and lose interest in life. The feeling of
depression is difficult to translate, difficult to express.
Poem 5
Dusk spreads
and the sun is set
on our land
What is this eclipse?
How odd
The thick darkness
thickens everyday
And the moon
is not be seen
anywhere
Notes:
This poem is about dementia. The darkness in this poem is a metaphor for gradual
irreversible loss of memory.
Poem 6
Notes:
This poem is about political theory. In the realist school of international relations theory,
contest and conflict are the permanent nature of world politics. Periods of peace if any are
temporary, only anarchy is the true permanent feature of the international system.
Poem 8
Notes:
This poem is about the catastrophe of climate change which disturbs the synchronisation
between the earth and sky. It focuses on the total – natural, cultural, and spiritual effect
of climate change.
Poem 10
Notes:
This poem is about the human element in the evolution of life on earth. It looks back at
the past and brings it into a dialogue with the present, allowing for a composite reflection
on love through the prism of biology, astronomy, and sociology.
