CT accuracy at low current levels

Our customer is using a CT 1200/5A, 5P10. He wants relay overcurrent protection to trip at 300A, which is only 25% of the
CT and IED rated. The relay type is REF543. The question is will the protection trip correctly and what might be the
accuracy?

The total accuracy is the CT accuracy + relay accuracy.

CT accuracy

Below are example of CT accuracies. You must ask from CT manufacturer similar kind of tests to be made.

5P has amplitude error 1% at rated current, and 60 minute (=1 degree) phase displacement error. I.e. we can look
class 1 curves from the figures below. From the curves we can now read that
- at 0.2 x In (20%) the accuracy is about 1.5% (phase angle error about 90 min = 1.5 degree)
- at 0.05 x In (5%) the accuracy is about 3% (phase angle error about 180 min = 3 degree)

Relay accuracy

The minimum setting in overcurrent function NOC3Low is 0.10 x In. Using protection unit scaling factor =1.0, this
means 0.1 x 1200A = 120A. I.e. there is no problem to get relay to trip at 300A.

The function block manual states that the accuracy is 2.5% of the set value or 0.01 x In, whichever is higher. In this
case 2.5% of 300A = 7.5A and 0.01 x In = 12A => accuracy is 12A which is 12A/300A x 100% = 4% of the set 300A
value.
