More On Standard Deviation
Two standard deviations would be 0.14 meters. Ninety-five percent of TW® Standard Deviations
men are between 1.66 and 1.94 meters. Three Standard Deviatians are o= 0.07 x2 = 0.14
0.21 meters and 99.73% of the Area of the Normal curve is between +3 jg -0 44-166
sigma (+30) and -3o. We can say that practically all of the men are sg 4.9 14-1 90
between 1.59 and 2.01 meters
Three Standard Deviations
o= 0.07x3=0.21
1.8-0.21=1.59
But... 1.84+0.21=2.01
What does this have to do with making nuts, bolts, transmissions
and aspirin tablets?
Only about 13 in 10,000 men are taller than 2.01 meters. The same is
true of men below 1.59 meters.
Ifwe have a machine which will measure every man wha comes down
the street, what are the odds that any individual man is 1.8 meters tall?
What are the odds that the next man who walks by will be between 1.5¢
and 2.01 meters? How about between 1.73 and 1.87 meters?
