Good morning class. Today, we have a new lesson.

Our lesson for today is solving word problems

involving partitive proportion in different contexts such as distance, rate, and time using appropriate
strategies and tools. In the other day, we tackled about proportion. I will exhibit to you some cards
bearing numbers and I want you to utter if it is a true proportion. If they are not proportion, make it a
proportion. Can you recall the steps in solving problem? Very good!

I have a basket filled with 31 pieces of eggplants. Three of our neighbors came to buy. Each of our
neighbor wants to buy 9 pieces of eggplants. How many pieces of eggplants remained in the basket?
What is asked in the problem? Nice answer! What are the given facts? Exactly! Can you write the
mathematical sentence? Correct! Who can give me the correct answer? Awesome!

A basket has 72 eggplants. Narcel, Mylen, and Ryan will share the eggplants in the ratio 2 : 1 : 3. How
many eggplants will each one of them get? Before going through with our lesson I am going to define
first the meaning of partitive proportion. It is a proportion describing the total amount being distributed
into two or more equal parts. To get the answer, we will add the quantities in the ratio then divide the
sum by the whole number then multiply the quotient to each of the quantity in the ratio. Moving on
with our lesson, what is asked in the problem? Terrific answer! What are the given facts? Very good!
Next, I am going to plan for the strategy by writing a partitive proportion to solve the problem. After the
plan, I will now solve for the answer. Let n be the number of eggplants each of them will get. So, I write
(2xn) + (1xn) + (3xn) = 72. I am going to add the 3 ratios 2 + 1 + 3 = 6. After getting the sum, I am now
ready to write the equation which is (2xn) + (1xn) + (3xn) = 72, 6 x n = 72. I will get rid of 6 and isolate n.
How am I going to isolate n? Since the inverse operation of multiplication is division, I will divide it by the
number itself which is 6. 6 x n divided by 6 becomes n and 72 divided by 6 equals 12. I will now multiply
12 to the given 3 ratios, since, 2 x n= 24, 1 x n= 12, and 3 x n= 36, then 24 : 12 : 36. Our answer will be 24
eggplants for Narcel, Mylen can get 12 and 36 eggplants for Ryan. Lastly, don’t forget to check if the
answer is correct. All we need to do is to add all eggplants received by Narcel, Mylen, and Ryan. 24 + 12
+ 36 = 72.

I am going to present to you another problem and I want everybody to participate. Three cars A, B, C
take 300 minutes to travel from X to Y. How long will each car travel with the ratio of 7 : 3 : 5? What is
asked in the problem? Nice answer. What are the given facts? Nice answer. Are you ready to solve the
problem? Moving on with the problem, may I remind you of the following reminders inorder to get the
correct answer. Understand the problem first; next, add the quantities in the ratio; do not forget to
divide the sum by the whole number; multiply the quotient to each of the quantity in the ratio; and
finally check your answer if it is correct.

I will be giving you another problem. Analyze and solve it carefully using the steps. Ok class, who can
answer the first step? Well done! How about step two? What a terrific answer! Anyone please for the
third step? Excellent! For the last step? Awesome!

Is it important to follow directions? It is seriously significant to follow directions. When your parents
or your teacher tells you that you must follow direction, you must follow it so that everything can go in
an orderly fashion. Just like with our lesson for today, it is easy to solve word problems if you follow the
steps and you will be escorted to come up with a correct result.

Class, how do we solve word problems involving partitive proportion? Very good! In addition, I will
be giving you one last problem. Please be guided with the steps.

This time, we will have a quiz. I will be giving you five word problems. Analyze the problems
carefully.

For your assignment, solve the given problem and you will pass it tomorrow. Goodbye class.
