TheengagedlearningprojectIdevelopedrequiredstudentstotakeontheroleofgeneticists.
Studentsusedwhatwelearnedinclassaboutgeneticsandcells,articlesIprovidedthem,and
interviewswithgeneticistsfromEmoryUniversitytoexplainhowgeneticcloningworksandhowitis
connectedtothecontentwehavelearnedinclass.Studentshavetodecideiftheyarefororagainst
cloningandarguetheirsidethroughanAdobeSparkvideo.Itakefullownershipforthe
developmentofthisengagedlearningprojectasIcreated,planned,andimplementeditwithmy
seventh-gradestudents.StudentsworkedontheELPfor90minutesaweekoverthecourseoffour
weeks.Thevideotheycreatedwassharedwithclassmates,onourschoolnewsshow,withthe
EmoryUniversitygeneticiststheywerepairedwith,andatthefamilytechnologynight.

Throughthedevelopmentoftheengagedlearningproject,Idemonstratedmyabilityto
modelandfacilitatetheuseofdigitaltoolsandresourcest osupportdiversestudentneedsby
providingthemmultiplemeansofrepresentation,engagement,andexpression.Studentshad
opportunitiestolearnandinteractwiththecontentthroughreadings,discussions,videos,and
interviewswiththegeneticscientists.Afterlearningandengagingwiththecontent,theywere
alsogivenchoiceinhowtheyrepresentedtheirknowledgethroughvideo.Theengagedlearning

Completingthisartifactgavemetheopportunitytodevelopalearningexperienceformy
studentsunlikeanytheyhadcompletedinthepast.Developingthisprojectchallengedmetomeeta
widerangeofstudentneeds,whilealsoenhancingculturalunderstandingandglobalawarenessin
correlationwithourcontentstandards.Toimprovethisartifact,Iwouldchoosethegroupsstudents
workedintoensurestudentsofvaryingneedsandabilitieswerereceivingthesupportstheyneedto
besuccessfulfrompeersaswellastheteacher.

Theworkthatwentintocreatingthisartifactimpactsstudentlearningbecauseitprovides
studentstheopportunitytointeractwithsciencecontentandhowitcanbeseenintheir
communitiesandthroughouttheworld.Theengagedlearningprojectallowedstudentsto
participateinanauthenticlearningexperiencethatchallengedthemtousetheircontentknowledge
andapplyit.Theimpactthisprojecthasonstudentlearningcanbeassessedthroughthequalityof
studentvideosandtheincreasedengagementandknowledgestudentshaveaboutgeneticsfrom
completingtheproject.
