Learning the English language can be fun and exciting. It does not need to be burdensome
and tiresome. Neither does it have to be expensive nor complicated. Just like learning any language, it
simply requires determination, diligence, and a positive outlook. It is as exciting as discovering the
world and all its hidden wonders.
This module is designed to help you learn independently the usefulness of language in
everyday life, even without the supervision of your teacher. Here, you will value your individual
strengths, as well as assess your personal needs and weaknesses, without any pressure and tension.
Topics contained in this module focus on essential topics in grammar and language usage,
which are strategically arranged to avoid complications and confusions. There are also
comprehensive sets of activities and exercises provided to make your learning more interactive and
experiential.
BRAIN STARTER
Grammar is important to understand your opinion or what is your point of view. Most of the time
it’s confusing but make some practice so you can make it perfectly or better than before.
You have just tried giving your initial answers or ideas about the importance of language learning.
As you go through this lesson, you will learn the rules of the English language, and eventually be
proficient by doing the succeeding sets of lessons and activities.

Hello learner! Your goal in this section is to review some of the basic rules in grammar and
language usage. You may refer to the PowerPoint component of this module. As you go through
this part, keep in mind this question: What is the importance of being proficient in the
English language?
SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT
Most native English speakers know the standard subject-verb combinations by ear.
However, if you do not trust your ear, or you find simple sentence formations confusing, just
follow these simple rules and you will be able to write good sentences.
1. Subjects and verbs must agree in number. This is the cornerstone rule that forms the
background of the concept.
2. Subordinate clauses that come between the subject and verb don't affect their agreement.
3. Prepositional phrases between the subject and the verb usually do not affect agreement.
4. When sentences start with "there" or "here," the subject will always be placed after the verb.
Some care needs to be taken to identify each part correctly.
There is a problem with the balance sheet.

5. Subjects don't always come before verbs in questions. Make sure you accurately identify the
subject before deciding on the proper verb form to use.
6. If two subjects are joined by "and," they typically require a plural verb form.
7. The verb is singular if the two subjects separated by "and" refer to the same person or thing as
a whole.
8. If one of the words "each," "every," or "no" comes before the subject, the verb is singular.
No smoking or drinking is allowed.
Every man and woman is required to check in.
9. If the subjects are both singular and are connected by the words "or," "nor," "neither/nor,"
"either/or," or "not only/but also," the verb is singular.
10. The only time the object of the preposition decides plural or singular verb forms is when
noun and pronoun subjects like "some," "half," "none," "more," or "all" are followed by a
prepositional phrase. Then the object of the preposition determines the form of the verb.
All of the chicken is gone.
All of the chickens are gone.
11. The singular verb form is usually reserved for units of measurement or time.
12. If the subjects are both plural and are connected by the words "or," "nor," "neither/nor,"
"either/or," or "not only/but also," the verb is plural.
13. If one subject is singular and the other is plural, and the words are connected by the words
"or," "nor," "neither/nor," "either/or," or "not only/but also," use the verb form of the subject that
is nearest the verb.
Everybody wants to be loved.
15. The exceptions to the above rule include the pronouns "few," "many," "several," "both,"
"all," and "some." These always take the plural form.
16. If two infinitives are separated by "and," they take the plural form of the verb.
To walk and to chew gum require great skill.
17. When gerunds are used as the subject of a sentence, they take the singular form of the verb.
However, when they are linked by "and," they take the plural form.
Standing in the water was a bad idea.
Swimming in the ocean and playing drums are my hobbies.
18. A collective noun, such as "team" or "staff," can be either singular or plural depending upon
the rest of the sentence. Typically, they take the singular form, as the collective noun is treated as
a cohesive single unit.
The herd is stampeding.
19. Titles of books, movies, novels, and other similar works are treated as singular and take a
singular verb.
20. Final rule: Remember, only the subject affects the verb! Nothing else matters.

1. CASE OF PRONOUNS
Pronouns are in the nominative case (I, he, she, we, they, who) when used as subject or predicate
nominative. They are in the objective case (me, him, her, us, them, whom) when used as direct
object, indirect object, or object of the preposition.
In the sentence above, I should be me since it is used as an object of the preposition for.
In formal English, me in the sentence above is unacceptable. The correct pronoun is I, since it is
used as the subject of the clause than I am. The example is an elliptical sentence since a word am-
is omitted.
The correct pronoun is they, not them, since it is used as the subject of the complete clause as
they are. As in the preceding example, this is also an elliptical sentence.
Mary was not sure who she could trust to finish the project.
Whom instead of who should be used since it is the object of the verb could trust.
2. SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT
A verb agrees with its subject in person and in number. Generally, if a subject is in the third
person singular, the verb (in the present tense) must agree with it by adding –s or –es. If a subject
is in the first person or is plural, the basic or infinitive form of the verb (in the present tense) is
used. For the verb be, is or was is used for a subject that is in the third person singular, are or
were for a subject that is in the first person or plural in number.
In this sentence, lass is in the third person singular. The verb must agree with it by adding –s, so
the correct form of the verb is seems.
Either the President or the cabinet members is to be accountable for the fiasco.
When the words or, nor, either-or, neither-nor, not only-but also join the parts of a compound
subject, the verb must agree with the nearer subject part. In the above example, is should be are
since the nearer subject part, cabinet members is plural.
Nouns plural in form but singular in meaning require a singular verb (is, was, has, or verb with –s
or –es). A plural noun which shows weight (kilos), extent (kilometers), or quantity (pesos) is
singular, and takes a singular verb. In the sentence above, were should be was since fifty million
pesos expresses quantity and, therefore, is singular in meaning.
Words joined to the subject of a sentence by such expressions as with, together with, as well as,
accompanied by, not, or including are considered parenthetical; therefore, they do not affect the
number of the verb. In the sentence above, were should be was since the subject Vic is singular.
Sentences that begin with there and here have the subject after the verb. In the sentence above, is
should be are since the subject, three old men, is plural.
3. PRONOUN-ANTECEDENT AGREEMENT
A pronoun may refer to a noun or another pronoun which precedes it in the sentence. This word is
called antecedent.
In this sentence, the antecedent-each-is singular. So, his not their, must be used.
The above sentence is wrong because the antecedent, anybody, is in the third person singular
while the pronoun, you is in the second person. The correct pronoun is he (if anybody wants my
position, he can have it.)
The President and the senator clarified his position on the issue.
In this sentence, the President and the senator are two different persons; note that both
antecedents are preceded by the article the. So, their, instead of his, must be used.
Saw, instead of have seen, must be used since there is a definite past time (last week). The
present perfect (has or have + past participle) is generally used when no one specific past time is
mentioned or implied in the sentence.
The teachers had left the room when the principal arrive.
The correct form of the verb is arrived, not arrive. The action occurred at a definite time in the
past (after the teachers had left the room).
5. SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD
The subjunctive mood is used to express something that is contrary to fact. In “if” statements
were rather than was should be used. So, was should be were in the sentence above.
The subjunctive mood is used in the sentences containing the verbs request, recommend, urge,
believe, desire, and doubt followed by a clause beginning with that. To express subjunctivity, the
verb in that clause must be in the basic or infinitive form. So, in the above sentence wait rather
than waits should be used.
6. COMPARISON
I want to find out which between Catherine and Elvin is the best.
When comparing two persons or things, use the comparative form of the adjective, not the
superlative. So in the above sentence, best should be better.
7. REDUNDANT MODIFIER
This test is more easier than the one I took last year.
The comparative form of easy is easier. Adding more to easier is redundant. So, in the above
sentence, more must be omitted.
8. DANGLING MODIFIER
A participial phrase at the beginning of a sentence describes the subject of the sentence. In the
sample sentence, it does not make sense that the ball should go for a dunk. Therefore, the
participial phrase is left dangling with nothing to modify. The sentence should be rewritten, thus:
When he went for a dunk, the ball slipped out of his hands.
9. DICTION
For 50 years now, medical researchers have been trying to fund a cure for cancer.
Questions on diction test your ear for words. Some questions ask you to spot a word that is
misused. Others ask you to identify a word that is wrongly used in a sentence and to replace it
with the correct word. In the sentence above, find instead of fund should be used.
Words or phrases in a series should be similar in form. In the example above, shooting instead of
how to shoot should be used to make it parallel with dribbling and passing.

competent. You are almost at the end of the module.
