Purpose ‘The description and operation of the engine fuel system is divided into thre sub-systems, the flow path of fuel being described in 73-10-0 Distribution, how the {uel system is controlled to give the cirrect fuel {low being described in 73-20-0 Controlling and crew compartment indications being described in 73-30-0 Indicating. ‘The purpose of the engine fuel system is to match the fuel delivery rate automatically to the engine requirement under all operating conditions and Ucliver the fuel to the combustion section in an atomized spray for efLicient burning. In addition the pilot has to be given control of engine speed and the fuel system must ensure that the engine operates within safe Limits ‘he thrust developed is dependent on the mass of air flowing through the engine and the temperature of the gases at the entry to the turbines. The fuel system provides a controlled quantity of fuel to heat the air, the temperatures achieved being governed by the amount of fuel burnt in the combustion section, The fuel flow will vary with changes of engine speed, and, at a constant engine speed, the fuel flow will vary with changes in altitude and the forward speed Of the aircraft. The effect of these variations is shown in fig.1, 2 and 3. ‘The atomization of the fuel delivered to the combustion section is provided for by the pressure of the fuel and in the design of the fuel spray nozzles Inerension FUEL FLOW tnerening a Variation of engine r.p.m. with fuel flow Fig.l 73-00 Page 1 Aug.9/68 rousacvee SEY sere snes MAINTENANCE Engine fuel and control - General (cont.) crenting ape i i 2 g | aS aes Vartation of fuel requirement Variation of fuel requirenent with eteieuae Sith sirerart speed rea Figsd 2. Distribution, control and indicating 73-00 Page 2 Distribution Fig.4 illustrates the flow of fuel from its entry to the low pressure (L.P.) fuel pump to its delivery into the combustion section. An L.P, fuel pump delivers the fuel from the aircraft eupply line to the oil cooler where the fuel is used to cool the engine and C.S.D. oil, The fuel then flows through the fuel filter to the high pressure (H.P.) fuel pump. The delivery from the H.P. pump flows through the fuel flow regulator where the fuel is divided into two flows at different pressures; fuel spray nozzle primary flow and fuel spray nozzle main flow. The primary flow is taken from upstream of the main flow and is therefore at a higher pressure than the main flow. The primary flow passes from the fuel flow regulator, through the H.P. fuel shut-off valve (S.0.V,) to the primary manifold tubes. The main flow passes from the fuel flow regulator through the L.P. shaft governor and the S.0,V, to the main manifold tubes, The manifold tubes deliver both the fuel flows to the fuel spray nozzles fitted in each of the ten liners of the combustion section, duly 21/67 Tr b/TS0 apo nousroree SP EY sero encine MAINTENANCE e Engine fuel and control - General (cont,) H.P, fuel is also supplied, from the fuel pump outlet and fuel flow regulator inlet, to the airflow control regulator and actuator and the airflow control r.p.m. signal transmitter which are part of the H.P. compressor control system (75-31-0). : — pa ET) [EW COT 2 —— Race tg eine amare rut tow 5 ee oe 3 notae i wate i now | faraun! The controls regulate the fuel flow from the H.P, fuel pump by a servo system to that required for the engine speed selected and then vary the fuel flow to maintain the speed selected with changes to the air- flow through the H.P, compressor (P2 and Pa). €S1/4-Tri M-Sp Code R Should the fuel flow demanded by the position of the throttle lever cause excessive L.P, compressor shaft speed, H.P, compressor delivery pressure or thrust, or turbine gas temperature the L.P. shaft governor, the P3 limiter in the fuel flow regulator and the temperature control actuator will override the setting of the throttle lever and trim the fuel flow. July 21/67 73-00 Page 3 rousrovee SIP EY sero encine MAINTENANCE Engine fuel and control - General (cont.) 73-00 Page 4 Should the fuel temperature rise above a pre-determined value, a fuel by- pass valve, fitted in the oil cooler outlet, will return fuel to the aircraft tanks and thus induce an increased flow of cool fuel through the oil cooler. The fuel flow is controlled for starting and stopping by a H.P. fuel S.0.V. lever connected by linkage to the shut-off valve, should a failure occur in the L.P. shaft, the S.0.V, will be automatically closed by the L.P, shaft failure system. Gene: In 79-00 brief details of the fuel system aro given, together with the inter- relationship of the distributing and controlling units. Fuller details of the distributing units are given below, and reference should be made to fig. which shows the distribution of the fuel flow and to fig.2 for the location of the units on the engine. 2, Low pressure fuel pump ‘The low pressure (L,P,) fuel pump maintains the fuel pressure at the high pressure (H.P.) fuel pump inlet high enough to prevent cavitation under normal operating conditions, so making the fuel syatem less dependent on the aircraft fuel tank booster pumps. 3, O11 coolers Fuel is circulated through the of] coolers to cool engine and C.S.D. ofl. ‘The transfer of heat from the oil to the fuel prevents the formation of ice in the fuel system. If this heat transfer causes excessive fuel temperature a temperature sensitive fuel by-pass valve (pre-Mod. 4653) returns fuel to the aircraft tanks and thereby induces an increased flow of cool fuel from the aircraft tanks. A temperature bulb in the cooler outlet gives an indication of fuel temperature, Mod. 4653 (S.B,Sp72-713) deletes the fuel by-pass valve. 4, Fuel filter ‘The fuel filter consists of a case, housing a replaceable element giving a high degree of filtration, All the fuel to the H.P, fuel pump passes through the element which prevents dirt or other foreign matter from entering the H.P, side of the system, As the fuel passes through the filter, indicating units monitor fuel flow, pressure differential across the filter element and filter outlet pressure. 5. High pressure fuel pump ‘The H.P, fuel pump delivers fuel to the high pressure side of the fuel system, The output from the pump is varied, to suit engine requirements, by a servo system; for a description of the servo system see 73-20-0. ‘The pump also supplies H.P, fuel to the airflow control r.p.m, signal transmitter which is part of the H,P, compressor control system (75-31-0). Fuel flow regulator Although the fuel flow regulator is a controlling unit and is fully described in 73 20-11, it does divide and distribute the fuel into two separate flows, fone to the fuel spray nozzle primary manifold and the other to the fuel spray nozzle main manifold. The flow to the primary manifold is taken from upstream of the flow to the main manifold and is maintained at a higher pressure. H.P, fuel is also supplied from the regulator inlet to the airflow control regulator and actuator, which is part of the H.P. compressor system (75-31-0), Fig.1 and 2 show Pg and P air tubes; these tubes are not part of the distribution system but are included for reference purposes from other sections in this chapter. 7. Low pressure (L.P.) shaft governor ‘The L.P, shaft governor is not a distributing unit but is included on fig.1 to enable the complete fuel system to be illustrated. 8. High pressure fuel shut-off valve ‘The high pressure fuel shut-off valve (S,0.V,) is a three position plunger type valve, In the ‘OPEN’ position both fuel flows to the fuel spray nozzle primary and main manifolds pass through the $.0.V, Fuel at pump delivery pressure supplements the fuel flows when the valve is in the *START* position. With the valve in the ‘CLOSED' position the flow to the manifolds is cut off and the fuel from the H.P, pump is returned to the fuel filter. The 5.0.V. is normally operated by a lever, through @ linkage, on the pilot's pedestal. Should, however, a failure occur in the L.P, turbine shaft, a control, through a cable and linkage will close the $.0.v, 9. Tubes and mani folds ‘Two tubes pass the fuel flow from the $,0,.V, to the primary and main manifold tubes which encircle the engine and direct the fuel flow, through the manifold elbows, to the fuel spray nozzles, 10. Distributor valves Fitted in each fuel spray nozzle supporting elbow is a distributor valve, spring loaded radially outwards in opposition to the main fuel flow, Tho valves counterbalance the weight of fuel in the main manifold so as to provide equal pressures at all the fuel spray nozzle heads. Fig.3 shows the arrangement of the fuel spray nozzles and tho valves, 73-10-0 Aug. 9/68 Page 6 Printed in Great Britain ads-n 442 (8s) aa e
