TORSIONAL STRESS

1. A solid aluminum shaft 2 in. in diameter is subjected to two torques as shown

in Fig. P-318. Determine the maximum shearing stress in each segment and the
angle of rotation of the free end. Use G = 4 × 10 6 psi.

Τmax = 16T/πD3

Tmax2 = 16(600)(12)/π(23) = 4583.66psi

Tmax3 = 16(800)(12)/π(23) = 6111.55psi

Θ = TL/JG

Θ = 1/JG ΣTL

Θ = 1÷1/31π(24 )(4×106)[600(2)+800(3)](122)

Θ = 0.0825rad

Θ = 4.73°

2. Determine the internal torque at each section and show the torsional stress on
differential volume elements located at A,B,C, and D.

T = π/16 × T × d3
Τ = 16T/πd3
T = N/m2

TAB = 16TAB/πd3
= 16 × 300/πd3
= 4800/πd3
TAB = 300 N.m (Anticlockwise)

TCD = 16TCD/πd3
= 16 × 500/πd3
= 8000/πd3
TCD = 300−800 = −500 N.m (Clockwise)
3. The two steel shaft shown in Fig. P-325, each with one end built into a rigid
support have flanges rigidly attached to their free ends. The shafts are to be
bolted together at their flanges. However, initially there is a 6° mismatch in the
location of the bolt holes as shown in the figure. Determine the maximum
shearing stress in each shaft after the shafts are bolted together. Use G = 12 ×
106 psi and neglect deformations of the bolts and flanges.

Θ of 6.5' shaft + θ of 3.25' shaft = 6°

(TL/JG) of 6.5' shaft + (TL/JG) of 3.25' shaft = 6° (π/180°)

T(6.5)(122) ÷ 1/32π(24)(12 × 106) + T(3.25)(122) ÷ 1/32π(1.54)(12×106) = π/30

T = 817.32lb⋅ft

Tmax = 16T/ πd3

T of 6.5' shaft = 16(817.32)(12)/π(23) = 6243.86 psi

T of 3.25' shaft = 16(817.32)(12)/π(1.53) = 14800.27 psi
