A specimen of silty soil has a bulk density of (18 kN/m 3) and a moisture content of (13%) determine:

a) Degree of saturation of the specimen,

b) Additional moisture content required for saturating the specimen. (Take G= 2.68).

c) The saturated unit weights.

d) The volume of the soil (in cm3) if the sample mass was 150 gm.

A specimen of rock was subjected to a tension force of (10 kN) which tends an axial deformation of (0.04
mm) and lateral deformation of (0.004 mm). if the sample dimensions (length 76 mm and Diameter 38
mm). Find:

a) Axial strain
b) Lateral strain
c) Volumetric strain
d) Young's modulus.
e) shear modulus.

A cylinder contains 500 cm 3 of loose dry sand which has a mass of 750 gm. Under a static load of 200 kPa
the volume is reduced 1%, and then by vibration it is reduced 10% of the original volume. Assume the
solid density of the sand is 2.65 gm/cm 3. compute the void ratio, porosity and dry density corresponding
to each of the following cases:

a) loose sand.
b) Under static load condition.
c) Under vibration load condition.
