Ooty – From May to June
The Ooty Summer Meet is a relatively
short affair, with just 10 race days held
in a span of a couple of months. The
event is an annual attraction at the hill
station, drawing nearly 500 horses and
50 jockeys. The highlight of every Ooty
Summer season is the traditional Niligiris
Gold Cup.
Other important races include the three

Mumbai Mahalaxmi Racecourse
– from November to March
Pune Racecourse - from July to
October
In Mumbai, the races go on Thursdays
and Sundays from November to March,
and Saturdays and Sundays in the
month of April. In Pune, they are only on
weekends, on Saturdays and Sundays
with the odd special race day held on a
Friday.
Madras – November to March
Of the two seasons at Guindy Race Track
in Chennai, the most highly anticipated
is the Madras Race. Also known as the
winter meeting, it stretches from
November to March. During this time, it
is uninterrupted by the heavy rains that
usually lash the city during the
monsoon. The meeting is very long, with
32 race days and close to 200 races.
Madras – from August to October
The monsoon races are held from
August to October. Sadly, India’s
monsoon horse racing season was
disrupted this year by the COVID-19
pandemic.
The RWITC hosts some of the most
prestigious horse races in India. It
has more than six Grade I main events
in a single calendar year. These include:

middle of July, the monsoon racing
season in Hyderabad ends in the last
week of October, or the first week of
November.
Winter – There is only a short break
between the two seasons, as the
second season commences in the
middle of November, with the end
coming sometime in the early days
of March.
