Language and com m unicat ion are at t he heart of t he hum an experience. The Unit ed
St at es m ust educat e st udent s who are linguist ically and cult urally equipped t o
com m unicat e successfully in a pluralist ic Am erican societ y and abroad. This im perat ive
envisions a fut ure in which ALL st udent s will develop and m aint ain proficiency in English
and at least one ot her language, m odern or classical. Children who com e t o school from
non- English backgrounds should also have opport unit ies t o develop furt her proficiencies in
t heir first language.

COM M UN I CATI ON The st udy of Classical Lat in is prim arily
Com m u n ica t e in La ngu a ge s Ot h e r Tha n concerned wit h t he int erpret at ion of t ext s and

t his int erpret ive m ode is m ost im port ant , Ecce
Rom a n i uses sim ple oral quest ion and answer
exercises in t he int erpersonal m ode as a m eans
of solidifying language acquisit ion. There is no
inst ruct ion in conversat ion as t here exist no
nat ive speakers of Lat in. Present at ions are
generally in English and focus upon t he lit erary
t ext s, t he hist orical and cult ural issues, as well
as t he oral reading of t he lit erary t ext s.
