Year 11 Chemistry Unit 1

Chapter 6
1. Use the information in Figure 6.1.2 to distinguish what the two types of bonds are found in a
beaker of water (p.143)

Covalent bonds, and Hydrogen bonds

2. Which of the bonds from Question 1 are disrupted when the beaker of water is heated? (p.143)

The hydrogen bonds

3. Define molecule (p.143)

A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical
compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.

4. Explain the difference between intramolecular and intermolecular bonds (p.144)

Intermolecular forces are the forces between molecules. Intramolecular forces are the forces
between the atoms of the molecules.

5. Define covalent bond (p.146)

A covalent bond is a bond where two atoms share electrons between each other to stabilize
each other.

6. Define diatomic molecule and give an example of one other than hydrogen gas, H 2 (p.146)

Molecules that contain two atoms.

7. Why does hydrogen have a low melting temperature if the covalent bonds within it are
considered strong? (p.147)

The intermolecular forces are weak, therefore it has a low boiling temp.

8. Define polyatomic molecule (p.149)

Molecules made up of more than two atoms.
