 Consumer Price Index - Agricultural Labour
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure that examines the weighted average
of prices of a basket of consumer goods and services, such as transportation, food,
and medical care. It is calculated by taking price changes for each item in the
predetermined basket of goods and averaging them

CPI grew by 11% during UPA 2 against just 5.5% during NDA.

Means inflation in farmer expenditure is halved during NDA.

 So why are these protests happening?

- Reasons for Farmer Protests only in Punjab:

⚡ Akali dal split in two; they want to use this to counter the insurgency

 Are middlemen ins2ga2ng the protests?
YES
FCI was routing all the payments to farmers through
Middlemen otherwise called as “Arhtiyas”.

They are paid 2.5% commission for every transaction.

Just for Paddy and Wheat, Middlemen in Punjab made close to Rs

3,330 crore. This excludes pulses, cereals, oil seeds, cotton,
sugarcane and vegetables. The unions are strong and the farmers
cannot bypass the middlemen.

Already the farmers are paid just 30% of MSP by Middlemen. So

being a Middlemen in Punjab is double bonanza.
Will farmers be at a loss under the new farm bills? NO!
• Soybean farmers in Maharashtra have benefited to get more out of APMC deals.
In the last three months, MahaFPC, the umbrella body of farmer producing
companies (FPC) in Maharashtra, es8mates that since the laws were enacted in
September, FPCs in four districts have made worth Rs 10 crore from trade
outside mandis.

Another Lie - Modi is giving off agriculture to corporates

• In 2012, for the first 8me an audit was conducted and the
finding was that 92,000 crore of food products go waste
due to lack of storage space.

• This is the same period retail chains in India started

expanding and they were used for secondary storage
space. So they started buying farm products directly from
farmer or through FCI.

• Was it Congress or the BJP government in power in 2012?

• If Contract Farming is a problem, then how have farmers from Punjab
and Haryana been earning so much?
- Clearly, they just want themselves to be the benefactors, and not allow
other farmers to earn better as well.
• Farmers can now sell their produce at the mandis as well as anywhere
outside the mandis.
- How can more options be a problem? You get to sell your pen at your
shop as well as online, opening a wider audience for you. Is that a
problem?
- Why aren’t farmers in the entire country protesting against the bills? In
fact, farmers in TN, West Bengal and Maharashtra have welcomed the
bills.
 Political agenda exposed

• If the govt had to end the prac8ce of MSP, why would it con8nuously
increase its rates and buy more from farmers year-on-year?
• If the govt had to end mandis, why would it digi8ze them on e-NAM
portal? Today, 1,000 mandis are registered on the portal.

• The new bills haven’t been applied in Punjab by the state govt. Why, then,
are farmers from Punjab protes8ng?

• What is the mo8ve of Khalistan and Shaheen Bagh protestors at farmers’

protests?
