The Department of Radiation Oncology at Michigan Medicine- Ann Arbor has
developed an annual golf outing that raises funds to benefit patients undergoing radiation therapy. The funds raised from this annual outing are primarily focused on improving the pediatric patient experience within our department. With a large supportive audience for the past three years, we have been able to make a tremendous impact on the lives of the children we care for and their families. Last year, over $10,000 was raised in a modified event that had every volunteer and participant's safety in mind. This year, the fourth annual Drive to Make a Difference charity golf outing will take place on August 15th, at the Davison Country Club. This is a 4-person golf scramble that raises funds by registering golfers, offering sponsorships, and receiving donations for a silent auction occurring at the event. There are many sponsorship opportunities available for businesses, including a platinum, gold, hole, putting green, closest to the pin, longest drive, breakfast, hole-in-one, driving range, drink cart, and lunch sponsorships with various price points. As a volunteer for this event, I contributed by contacting many businesses in the area and offering the sponsorship opportunities available. I also requested any monetary donation or item for the silent auction. I was fortunate to find a couple business owners who signed up for a sponsorship or donated towards the auction. Although I am unable to volunteer at this event in person, I am honored to take the quality time in assisting with preparing for the outing and contributing towards improving our patients’ experience in our department. I have learned a lot through volunteering in person at other events, but I was able to better understand the importance of contributing to the preparations through this volunteer opportunity. Over the years in our department as a therapist, I have witnessed how greatly these pediatric patients are affected by their treatments. The funds from these events have and continue to make a monumental improvement on their radiation therapy experience and I appreciate taking part in this accomplishment.
